YAMJ for Newbies, a basic introduction

Introduction

This is a brief overview of some YAMJ basics to get you started. Installing, using, and troubleshooting YAMJ can be complicated and confusing when first starting out, so in this page are various items, explained in simplified terms, that are essential to understand on your journey to enjoying YAMJ. This section could also be called "YAMJ for idiots" or "YAMJ for newbies" or "Read Me First"

Details

  • MovieJukebox is the name of the program and can be thought of as essentially synonymous to the term "YAMJ" and thus the terms are basically used interchangeably (except, of course, when actually entering the command to run the MovieJukebox program.)
  • The MovieJukebox page lists the features and various screenshots of YAMJ
  • The MovieJukebox program is run from your PC (Linux, Mac, or Windows) to create a web page that gets stored on your media player. So YAMJ does not really "run" on your media player: your media player just displays the web page created by YAMJ to help you display and play the videos in your library.
  • Whenever you re-run the MovieJukebox program on your PC, the YAMJ web page gets replaced/overwritten on your media player. If you goof up the setup or add new files to your library, just re-run the MovieJukebox program on your PC.
  • Running the MovieJukebox program could take quite some time depending on how big you library is. So, when first trying to setup YAMJ, use a folder with only a few movies or tv shows (like maybe ~5). It will be much easier to test your set-up because the program will run quicker since it only has to do an internet search for a few files. When everything looks like it is working fine, you can re-run the MovieJukebox program with your entire library.
  • You will have more success in setting up YAMJ if the filenames of the media in your library begins with the titles exactly as listed on either http://www.imdb.com for movies or http://thetvdb.com/ for TV shows. The FileNaming page has much more info if you have any problems or questions.
