Spawn Rates

In Pokémon games, while many wild Pokémon have an equal 50% chance of being male or female, specific species are programmed with skewed gender ratios to reflect their lore, rarity, or design. A 25%/75% split (or its reverse, 75%/25%) is one of the standard ratios used in the series. Here’s how it works:

Common Gender Ratios in Pokémon

  • 50% Male / 50% Female: The default for most species (e.g., Pidgey, Rattata).
  • 87.5% Male / 12.5% Female: Often used for rare or powerful Pokémon (e.g., Tauros, starters like Bulbasaur, Litleo is included here
  • 12.5% Male / 87.5% Female: Used for some female-heavy species (e.g., Vulpix, Clefairy).
  • 75% Male / 25% Female: Common for certain species (e.g., Machop, Abra).
  • 25% Male / 75% Female: Seen in others (e.g., Jigglypuff, Meowth).

The 25%/75% Split Specifically
The 25%/75% gender ratio is hardcoded into the game’s data for specific Pokémon species when they spawn in the wild (or are generated as eggs, trades, etc.). This affects the likelihood of encountering a male or female of that species. For example:

  • Machop: 75% male, 25% female. This reflects its "masculine" fighting theme.
  • Jigglypuff: 25% male, 75% female, tying into its "feminine" aesthetic.
  • Eevee: 87.5% male, 12.5% female, but its evolved forms like Vaporeon stick to that ratio unless bred differently.

These ratios don’t directly affect the overall encounter rate of the species in the wild (e.g., Machop might still be a 30% encounter in a given area), but once that species is encountered, the game rolls for gender based on its assigned ratio. So, if you’re hunting for a female Machop (25% chance per encounter), it’s tougher than finding a male.

Why This Happens
The gender ratio is part of the Pokémon’s internal data and has been consistent since Generation II (when gender was introduced). It’s not tied to location-specific encounter rates but rather to the species itself. The 25%/75% split is a deliberate design choice by Game Freak, often to balance gameplay (e.g., making females rarer for breeding) or to match a Pokémon’s concept.
