Tylo is an insanely massive so-called "Superkerbin" planet, the fourth away from the Sun. It is thought to be the core of a failed gas giant like Jool, made from rock and ice. Some have suspected that Tylo may support intelligent life of some strange sort on its crushing surface. However, because of the high escape velocity of the planet, astronomers agree that the chances of anything coming from Tylo are over a million to one. Its atmosphere is so thin that it won't slow you down, but it is so thick that it will burn you up on re-entry. Some Kerbals have even suggested that landing on Tylo is impossible, let alone returning. For this reason, Tylo has won the spaceflight engineer's award for "Most Hated Planet and/or Moon." The Kerbal Astronomical Society claims to give three golden stars to the first kerbal to make the return trip.

Tylo is around twice the size of Kerbin and has four times the gravity. And all with a thin atmosphere. Because of its short atmosphere height of only 18 km and its already thin 0.7 atmosphere pressure, slowing down enough to land can only really be accomplished in the lowlands, with the highlands being almost in a vacuum. It orbits more distant than Jool, outside of the habitable zone.

THE THREE STAR TYLO CHALLENGE

Back when Alternis Kerbol 0.1 was out, Tylo was an extremely difficult destination. Harder than Eve to land and return from. I'd only ever seen one person do the mission, and that was without the Deadly Reentry mod that added re-entry heating. Now re-entry heating is on by default. Tylo is right now the single most difficult planet to land on, in this mod or in stock.

Easy Mode: Land a space probe on the surface of Super Tylo. You get one gold star. Normal Mode: Land a kerballed spacecraft on the surface of Super Tylo, plant a flag, and get back into orbit. You will be rewarded with two gold stars. (Three if you're the first person to do it) Hard Mode: Impress me. If you've impressed me enough you will get three gold stars. (Impressing me need not rely on Tylo, there are other difficult things to do in the Alternis system.)
