Shure SM57

SM57

Overview

The SM57 is used mainly for Tom-Toms, Guitar and Bass Amplifiers.

To mic the drums, use the Shure Drum Microphone Kit located in the Drum bin/cart. This kit contains:

  • 3 SM57 Dynamic Instrument Mics
  • 1 BETA 52A Kick Drum Mic
  • 3 A56D Drum Mounting Systems

How to Use

Instrument Placement
Drum Tom(s) Using the mounting hardware in the Shure Drum Mic kit, install one SM57 mic on each tom placed 1 to 3 in. above drum heads. Aim each microphone at top drum heads.
Guitar or Bass Amplifier Sharp attack; emphasized bass: Place 1 in. from speaker, on-axis with center of speaker cone. Medium attack; full, balanced sound: Place 6 to 12 in. away from speaker and on-axis with speaker cone
Troubleshooting & Repair

  • Issue: When unplugging an XLR cable the XLR pins pull out from the base of the mic.

    • Cause: There is small screw in the base of the mic tightening over time and no longer protruding out of the port hole.
    • Resolution:
        1. Lining up the notches on the XLR pin board and the groove in the base of the mic, gently push the pins back into the base of the mic until the small flat screw is visible through the port hole.
        1. Next, turn the screw CLOCKWISE until it's protruding enough to hold the pins in place when unplugging an XLR cable.
