Connections / cabling
Types
- HDMI - the primary one we use ... currently we use 1080p (1920x1080) resolution. These cables transmit audio and video.
- DisplayPort - comes in multiple flavors ... refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort for more info. There are also single-mode and dual-mode (also called DisplayPort++ or DP++) connections. These differences typically dictate whether a passive or active adapter has to be used.
- original connector - fairly large connector, can be somewhat difficult to disconnect. Our production ThinkPad has this type of connector. Can be single-mode or dual-mode (look for ++ logo).
- "mini" - smaller connector, easy to connect / disconnect (can be confused with Lightning 2 on macs)
- Lightning 2 - looks like a mini DisplayPort connection (typically found on Macs and high-end laptops). Can be used for many types of peripherals (monitors, projectors, audio devices, hard drives).
- DVI - a "d-shell" type of connector ... basically HDMI without audio.
- "VGA" - a smaller "d-shell" connector, the standard for projectors and monitors before HDMI became popular.
All of the types above (except VGA) can be interconnected using an "adapter." VGA connections generally only work with other VGA connections. In order to do HDMI-to-VGA or VGA-to-HDMI, a special converter would be required.
