VFP: Miscellaneous Items

As of: mc1.12.2-4.1.0 (Oct-2017)

One of the main tenants of the VanillaFoodPantry mod is to use as many of the vanilla or un-modded game's foodstuffs, plants, and tools as possible to create a variety of reasonably believable products. The mod does not include any new custom machines for example; instead it uses the basic crafting workbench and furnace that all players have.

That said, with only the vanilla items it's often hard to convey any sense of real connection with actual food preparation. (I mean seriously,...why can't you smelt an egg? And how does one steak have more nutrition than an entire chicken?) To address this issue, the mod requires some symbolic craft-only items in many of its recipes. The idea is to add a bit of complexity that matches some of the effort that actually making these foods would require, while not making the recipes too onerous for most players. The addition of crafting experience points and achievements also helps (we hope).

Craft-only items are often reusable but not always.

Flint Cutter

A flint cutter is a craft-only item that we use to portion or "cut" meats, vegetables and bulk materials such as wool blocks into strings. You can use a single cutter 16 times before it's used up. The number of remaining uses is shown as a tooltip and represented as a durability bar for the item. Of all the craft-only items in the mod, this one is probably the most important one to secure.

Red Flint

The default recipe is a common one that might be used by another mod. If this recipe is taken, you should go "flint mining" for a new kind of flint, Red Flint, that VFP has added as a drop for standard gravel blocks. Red Flint is actually bluish as shown in the recipe below. Substitute a piece of the new flint for either piece of regular flint in the recipe. You can also use Red Flint to make other items like Animal Hide Tie which you use for fishing rods, bows, and leashes.

Alternate Flint Cutter Recipe Red Flint: use for flint cutters and other things.

As previously stated, you can use a Flint Cutter to cut things other than food. You can disable this particular functionality in the mod's configuration although you'll always be able to use the cutter to portion food.

Bit Measure

A bit measure is a reusable craft-only item we use to represent the portioning of bulk liquids such as milk buckets, water buckets, and even lava buckets into smaller amounts. Like a Flint Cutter does for solid ingredients, a Bit Measure lets us bring a sense of different ingredient volumes to recipes for drinks, soups, and other liquidy things. You must use either of the two recipes shown.

We also use bit measures to represent the straining or separation of an ingredient into multiple constituent parts. For example, we use a bit measure in the recipe for Egg Whites to represent the separation of the egg yolk and egg white of the raw egg.

Cloth Squeeze Bags

Cloth bags are craft-only item we use to represent the straining or separation of a recipe output in the creation process. You use cloth bags in the Homemade Butter recipe for example to represent the straining and forming of the soft butter into its final shape. To make cloth bags you can use any string and stickWood item in the recipe; however, you must use 3 standard white wool blocks.

Heavy Weight

A heavy weight is a reusable craft-only item we use to represent compression or compaction of a recipe's inputs in some fashion. You use a heavy weight in the Homemade Cheese recipe for example to signify the compression of the milk curds. You must use the exact recipe as shown below.

Decker (or Sandwich) Press

A decker or sandwich press is a reusable two-sided variant of the Heavy Weight item that we use to represent compression for sandwiches and BIG sandwiches in particular. You must use the exact recipe as shown below.

Fermenting Bucket

A fermenting bucket is a reusable craft-only item that represents a sanitary, food-safe container that holds a recipe's intermediate result over some extended period of time. You use a fermenting bucket in the Vinegar Powder recipe for example to represent the fermenting of the apples into mush. You must use the exact recipe as shown below.

Bottles and Jars

Jars are discussed in detail on the Food Packaging page.

A Jar of Sand

A jar of sand is a reusable craft-only item that is a cheap (weird?) version of a rolling pin. Use to make Flat Bread and Rotis. You must use the exact recipe as shown below.

Colored Feathers

A colored feather is a dyed feather you use to create Phoenix Feathers for potions of Undying. If you play with the Animania mod, this item is a vanilla-based substitute for the special peacock feathers in the phoenix feather recipe. Note that a standard chicken feather is required in the recipe though you can substitute same-colored modded dyes for each the standard dyes shown below.
