The Venomous Sword is an apprentice reforger's specialty sword. The Venomous is a general purpose sword that is slightly faster and more deadly that a standard unenchanted diamond sword. Unfortunately, it also has the durability of an iron sword. The Venomous' raison d'être is its utility as a harvester of spider venom for potions and antitoxin, and its use as a material in the journeyman reforger's Virulence Sword.

Secondary Attacks
In addition to its direct damage, the Venomous sword has a secondary custom attack that inflicts the dangerous Venom debuff for 40 seconds. The debuff is also applied to close-by targets affected by a Sweeping Edge enchant. For hit players, the venom debuff cannot be cleared with regular milk and requires antitoxin to purge completely from their systems (venom toxin accumulates otherwise, affecting health regen eventually).
Mob Immunity
The Venomous sword is ineffective against withers, all skeleton mobs, and poisonous spiders like the standard cave spider; these mobs are damaged by the sword's direct hit only and not its venom. Cave spiders may even gain strength from being hit by a venomous sword! In general the sword is useless against boss mobs unless it is enchanted with at least a level II Corrupting Taint; in this case the sword is as deadly against such mobs as it is with regular ones.
Farming Venom
Although it's dangerous, there is a good reason to use your Venomous sword against cave spiders: it is the only way to obtain a supply of Venom yourself. You'll need venom to repair your sword, to distill the toxin for things like tipped arrows and soaked squishy ammo, and most importantly, to make Venom Antitoxin in case you are exposed to venom yourself. Tip: reinforce the sword's durability before going spider hunting.
There Be Consequences
If you're ever exposed to venom, for instance by being attacked by another player or for being too close to an exploding infected creeper's lingering death cloud, you'll need to clear the venom from your system by taking some antitoxin. Simply clearing or waiting-out the immediate effect DOES NOT REMOVE THE TOXIN, just the immediate symptoms of it. If you like using venom with explosives or lingering potions, you should always have some venom antitoxin handy.
Repair
To repair a Venomous sword you can use an anvil with a single venom sac or a Reforger Gem Remnant. You can extend the sword's durability with both the Unbreaking and Mending enchantments. Mod-specific enchantments like Scavenging Heal and Parasitic Mending also work.
