Better Fishing Rods

The first way PinklySheep helps you be more productive with fishing is to provide a pair of baited fishing rods. The rods are actually standard fishing rods pre-enchanted with Lure to represent the beneficial effect of the earthworms you've added. You'll need Balls o' Earthworms for the recipe; you can craft these with 9 individual worms. Note that these rods are great for catching fish; earthworms don't attract old leather boots or enchanted books much.

If you've not got spare Unbreaking enchants lying around to use for fishing rods, using a few earthworms is a pretty cheap way to make very productive rods whenever you need to.

Lazy Fishing - The Rod Auto-Caster

Some players love fishing, most don't, and some like fishing fine but also like the occasional automatic AFK-isque session when they need to improve their chances of getting a particular treasure item. The Fishin' Line Caster is a gadget you can retrofit into a typical AFK farm or install independently. It automates the rod casting part with support for applying experience drops to a rod if it has the Mending enchant just like with regular fishing.

You'll need a source of Mending Twine to create some Reinforced Twine for the caster and an earthworm or grub farm if you want to increase the volume of fish beyond what the rod's enchantments will do. The caster accepts up to 2 standard rods or any derivative thereof. If at least one of the rods has the Mending enchantment, the caster will automatically apply durability mending from the generated Xp so you'll probably never have to restock the rod. If you stock the caster with additional bait, this increases the amount of caught fish; the bait has no effect on junk and treasure item rates. Effective bait includes earthworms(meh), Balls o' Earthworms(good), and Blight Grubs (BEST!).

Crafting Reinforced Twine Create lots of reinforced twine.

Crafting Fishing Rod Autocaster

Auto-Caster Installation

Place the auto-caster so that it's adjacent to a water source block with an air block above both the water source and the caster itself. There must be an air block directly below the caster as well as this is where all the fished items and Xp orbs are deposited (as would happen for an AFK farm). Below is an example of a typical 1.12 AFK fish farm updated to use a line auto-caster. Note: in the picture below, a solid block (opposite from the green wool) was removed so you could see the placement of the caster and the new hopper location. You need to put that block back.

Typical 1.12 AFK Fish Farm Setup

If you're building a new farm, the layout below shows the requirements for water source placement and air blocks. This structure can sit above ground, at ground level, or even in an open body of water. Because the line caster also drops experience orbs, you could use a hopper or similar device that collects these orbs (the Fatty Hopper is a good choice) for a lightweight Xp farm as well.

Squirmies Box Farm

In order to outfit a Trawl Station for fishing, you need very large amounts of Earthworms. Although you can construct a simple compost based earthworm farm to get started, in order to maintain a steady high-volume supply to get the compressed Earthworm Mass bait you need for trawling, you should setup and use a Squirmies Box Farm. You can use either Wet Dung or Raw Compost blocks to create the farm sections.

Crafting Squirmies Farm Section Crafting Squirmies Farm

Place your farm box so that it has an air block above or below and at least two sides next to any standard dirt block or compost (three sides is better). Then put as many loose earthworms as you have into the left side slots, until your first mass appears. An earthworm mass requires 500 individual worms, so you won't see a mass present in the farm until the farm contains at least that many worms. Once you've put 1 or 2 masses worth of worms into a farm it will become self-sustaining; however, the more you help it along initially, the faster it will get to a robust reproduction rate.

A squirmy box farm Earthworms Farm GUI

Drop green waste blocks and any loose earthworms you're harvesting from a compost farm into the left side slots; the green waste is what feeds the worms and must be replenished occasionally. Over time, any excess squirmies and waste by-products are dropped off in the right side slots. Make sure you pipe the waste products out of the box (see the hopper and chest in the picture above as an example), otherwise the waste begins to negatively impact the health of the farm. Presently, a box farm can hold up-to 16K or 32 masses of squirmies before it becomes over-crowded. At this point, you can simply remove some of the masses to other storage and let the farm refill.

Example Farm Waste Products Farm waste products (this is good stuff!)

Although the trawl station uses only earthworm masses for bait, you can use a squirmies farm for Waastis Eaticus Larvae as well. As you'll need a bit of larvae to create Green Waste blocks, having a box farm for each type of squirmy is a good idea. For larvae in particular, a farm box is a more efficient way to get new squirmies from a block of manure plus you get waste products to craft into slimeballs, Guardian Chum, and other things.

Larvae Farm GUI Use blocks of manure for nutrients!

One last note: the current biome's temperature, humidity, and active weather can affect squirmies farm boxes unless you have disabled this in the configuration options. In particular, farms will not function at all if placed outside in a cold biome or in or next-to water; underground or in a protected area is fine.

Trawl Stations

A Trawl Station is a Pinkly Sheep contraption that combines deep water trawling, bulk fish processing and packaging, and debris recycling. With a single station, you can capture the equivalent of 24 chests of trawled items, like fish, enchanted books, etc. at least. And by activating the station's recycling mode which discards useless items and reduces other items to more generic and stackable forms, you can get an even larger haul of useful stuff. Yea, it's truly pinkly magical.

To get started, you need to create lots of Trawl Netting from Reinforced Twine (see crafting recipe in "Lazy Fishing - The Rod Auto-Caster" section above). A new station can do just under 3000 casts, before its netting must be repaired to continue functioning. You can see the number of remaining casts as the 2nd number shown on the GUI's top right corner.

Crafting Trawl Netting Create lots of trawl netting.

Crafting Trawl Station Empty Trawl Station GUI

To operate the station, you put materials and bait into the left hand slots. Up to five stacks of fish will be put into the upper right "Quick Take" slots, while the bottom right slots will contain the packaged trawl crates of whatever additional items are captured (additional fish, junk, enchanted books, etc.) Materials and bait are consumed as needed, so you can put a supply of items into the slots and not worry about losing them if you have to break the station block.

Station Installation

A trawl station has a set of environment requirements for installation and proper operation. First, a trawl station will not work at all unless it's surrounded by at least four(4) blocks of full water sources on every side. There is some flexibility in this requirement to accomodate things like hoppers or other ductwork for automation, but in general the station requires a large body of water like an ocean or deep river to work.

Placing a Trawl Station in a river A trawl station installed in a deep river.

Second, the station has to be set into one of six modes of operation. Depending on the mode, additional requirements for materials and surrounding biome may exist; read the table below. The default and simpliest mode, the "Minecraft" mode matches what you'd get from manual fishing and requires a mass of earthworms for bait; read the "Squirmies Box Farm" section above to find out how to get this bait.

To change the station's mode you have to put a specific selector item into the left topmost slot in the station's GUI. You can switch between modes for a single station without breaking the block.

Item Mode Bait Description
(none) Minecraft Y Default mode. Everything caught is kept, and items (fish vs junk vs treasure) have the same distribution as manual fishing.
Scavenger Y Most non-fish items are recycled or discarded, including damaged armor, tools, and weapons. All fish, enchanted books and a few choice standard items are kept; you can extend the list of kept items using configuration options. Note that only standard game items like potion water bottles and saddles are reduced to stackable material items.
Fisherman Y Only fish and edible items like shellfish are kept. To capture massive amounts of fish, use an additional bait like Blighted Grubs; earthworm mass bait is required always. This mode is very useful for generating player food and bait fish for the two Cousteau modes.
Librarian N Any caught book, tool or weapon that is enchanted and not too damaged is stripped to one or more Locked Enchantment books. All other items are discarded unconditionally. Live bait is not required, but books are if you want the stripping of tools and weapons. Otherwise, only enchanted books are saved as caught.
Cousteau (1) N An extension of the Scavenger mode for rivers and oceans that targets squid as well as regular fish. This mode requires that the station be placed in a river or ocean biome. This mode accepts fish as bait for squid, so it's efficient to supply earthworm bait for lots of fish and to just transfer any caught fish from the 'Quick Take' output slots into the materials input slots. Accepts other squid bait like beanstalk Heart Worms and Bone Leeches
Cousteau (2) N An extension of the Scavenger mode for rivers and oceans that targets squid and guardians as well as fish. This mode requires that the station be placed in a river or ocean biome. This mode accepts the special Guardian Chum bait as a lure for guardians. Normally, you don't supply earthworm or fish bait in this mode to maximize the storage space for guardian related items. To use this mode you must first obtain an Eye of Giants drop by killing an elder guardian.

Cousteau Modes (for existing farms)

Please note that for the two Cousteau modes, the targeted entities like squid and guardians must spawn via some exterior means. The station itself does NOT magically generate them. Normally this means you're placing the station into an existing entity spawning area to work as a compact kill and drop collection system.

Station Materials

Once your station is properly installed, it will start capturing or hauling fish and other items for processing. The station has a small number of storage slots builtin. However, a primary reason for using a Trawl Station versus a Fishing Rod Auto-Caster, is to leverage the automatic processing and bulk packaging of larger hauls. To do this you must provide the station with an ongoing supply of:

  1. Empty Trawl Crates to fill...
  2. New Trawl Netting for repairs...
  3. Appropriate bait or lures to improve the quality and quantity of each haul...

The last two items have already been discussed in the preceding sections. A Trawl Crate is a customized, chest-sized container used by trawl stations. The empty crate lets you stack a supply of 64 single chests of storage into a single trawl station materials slot. As the station trawls for fish and other things, it fills a single crate until there are no more crate slots, then the station uses the crate's reinforced twine to seal the crate and moves it to one of the station's output slots. From the station's GUI, you can see the remaining empty crates (2nd slot left side), the crate being filled (last slot, top right side), and sealed crates ready for pickup (4 bottom right rows). Look at the screenshots in the Examples section below.

Crafting Trawl Crate

To see what's inside any crate just place it as you would a shulker box or chest. Often you get back one or both pieces of reinforced twine to reuse. Without any automation to pull sealed crates out of the station, a player can store up to 24 chests of hauled items.

Station Overflow

If you let the station's output slots fill up (whether with sealed crates or plain items), the station does NOT stop working. Instead it will simple drop its hauled items in the space below. If you don't care about bulk packaging, you can setup a hopper grid or other collection mechanism below the station to catch drops this way. Be sure the collection setup does not interfere with the required water zone around the station (4x4 cube).

Setup Examples

Enough words! Here are some pictures!

Scavenger Mode (also pretty close to 'Default' mode)

You will find that your sealed crate slots are filled with unstackables like enchanted books and other treasure items (you can update your config to include modded treasure and uncommon items as was done for the sample shown). Scavenger mode will reduce items like damaged armor and bows to simple materials like leather and sticks to maximize the number of available open slots. Make sure to keep your station stocked with bait and new netting!

Example setup for Scavenger mode Example full crate for Scavenger mode

Fisherman Mode

If you need fish, as in a LOT of fish, this is the mode you want. The example below shows only standard fish so the packing efficiency is very high as there are only 4 kinds of vanilla fish. The more mods you've got that alter the 'fishing/fish' loot table, the less effective the stacking in a sealed crate will become. Also, the types of additional bait you use matter; for instance, if you use Blighted Grubs, that will increase the occurance of salmon and pufferfish to the detriment of something like the clownfish (as seen in example!) Make sure to keep your station stocked with bait and new netting!

Example setup for Fisherman mode Example full crate for Scavenger mode

Librarian Mode

If you need a predictable source of Level-30 enchanted books, this is the mode you want. Even better is to supply a source of books so the station can automatically strip multi-enchantment books into individual locked enchantment books for ala carte personal use or for trading. Single enchantment books are also converted, however, their unlock payment currency is Oak Acorns instead of the usual items like gold, emeralds and diamonds.

Example setup for Librarian mode Example full crate for Librarian mode

For more information about Locked Enchantment Books, read the Enchantments page.

Cousteau Mode (Squid only)

Use the Squid-only Cousteau mode to farm ink sacs, luminesce sacs (for Lumiballs and glow glass), ink pearl fragments (for potions and ink pearls), and raw squid meat for food and as a main ingredient for Guardian Chum bait. Make sure to place your station in a river or ocean biome and to keep it stocked with fish bait and new netting!

Example setup for Cousteau mode 1 Example full crate for Cousteau mode 1

Cousteau Mode (Squid and Guardians)

To use this mode you first need to obtain an Eye of Giants from an elder guardian or a Universal Eye of Giants via some other means. The eye of giants is a new drop added by PinklySheep to the elder guardian's player kill loot pool. While it depends on what other mods have modified the loot tables, if only PinklySheep has, you have ~20% chance per kill of getting this drop.

If you want to maximize the amount of guardian-specific items the station takes in, make sure to keep your station stocked only with guardian bait such as Guardian Chum(Best), beanstalk Heart Worm(Best), Bone Leeches(Best), Putrid Fish(Good), and if Harvestcraft is available, octupus(Meh) and eel(Meh).
