As of: mc1.12.2-4.9 (Jun-2019)

The Grim Reaper Sword is an advanced-game master reforger's specialty sword. The Reaper is custom made for plowing through hordes of hostiles when you're no longer interested in their drops. Instead of the mob's usual drops you'll get a couple pieces of Grim Coal, if that. Note that this side-effect makes the reaper a bad choice for killing anything where you need the original drops, like bosses! The attack stats shown in the sword's tooltips are the minimum damage the sword inflicts. Because its source material includes that of a Hellfire Sword, if you're fighting in the Nether dimension a reaper sword can usually one-shot kill all standard mobs and even hardened mobs with up to 50 max health, 100 max health-- if the reaper's been sated with Darkened Souls.

Materials for a Grim Reaper Sword

Targeted Insta-Kill

The reaper has a secondary characteristic you can control in order to get the full effect of the sword. If you pair a reaper sword with a targeted Darkened Eye it will hone in on or target that type of mob for ruthless 'insta-kill' regardless of the mob's max health. However, just targeting the sword to a mob is not enough. You also need to supply a source of tainted energy to the sword; otherwise it might just consume some energy from you as it applies its grim touch. Fortunately, you can use Darkened Souls as tainted fuel for the sword. Each soul you feed the reaper represents 16 "harvests" or insta-kills for the targeted mob. Of course, if your game environment is tailored to prevent single-hit killing sprees, the reaper's efficacy will be affected. For bosses, the reaper can do significant damage, but it will never kill a boss in one hit even if targeted to that boss entity. Boss hits will also consume up to 8 souls per hit.

Secondary Attacks

If you're unable to obtain Darkened Souls or the sword runs out of harvests, the reaper has two secondary custom attacks: the first is a potion voiding effect against the target (similar to the Corrupted Ender Sword's attack) and the second inflicts the dangerous X-Gravity debuff for 20 seconds. Note that these attacks are in addition to the inherited hellfire secondary attack of the grim reaper's parent sword.

Feeding the Reaper

You must supply a steady diet of Darkened Souls to your reaper sword in order for it to maintain its deadly insta-kill touch. If not fed, the sword's damage is only fractionally improved from the base stats shown in its tooltip (basically the same values as the Hellfire sword it's based on).

Repair

To repair a Grim Reaper sword you can use an anvil with a single Condemned Earth block or a Master Reforger's Gem. The condemned earth must be aged by having spawned at least one form of hostile mob. You can extend the sword's durability only with an Unbreaking and/or Mending X-enchantment.
