this is very rough early draft
Inukami sat on the bench outside the hospital the cicadae’s and asphalt crackling. It was a hot day even for early august. This was the third trip Miko had made to the hospital this month. What do you mean our insurance deductible has been raised? This is outrageous how do you to expect me to be able to pay this, well you can just go and fuck your nice day. His father slammed his phone shut. God danm this girl… “Dad how could you say that she doesn’t get sick on purpose”. Inukami got up sick of listening to his father and sister argue, he went inside, the doors whished open and he was greeted with the glare of the florescent lights and their incessant clicking. Immediately he felt a wave of nausea.
His sister was on the fifth floor but he decided to take the stairs like usual it was the only part of the building he could stand. Hospitals had never really sat well with him after the birth of his sister. And with her getting sick as much as she had been it was even worse. Miko had had health issues since birth. The doctors had never really been sure what it was and there was not enough money to treat anything anyways. Inukami stopped on the third floor and peered out the window to check, sure enough the bird was sitting out their again. He didn’t even know why he noticed it but it seemed every time they came to the hospital. It sat their staring at him as always his pitch black feathers gleaming in the sun. It always felt like it was watching him as he climbed to the fourth floor, by the time Inukami got to the fifth floor he had forgotten all about it, now his head swirled with thoughts of his sister’s condition.
When they were younger she had always been so energetic. She had always gotten sick more often the most kids but it was never very serious. It wasn’t till she turned eight she got seriously ill for the first time, during the middle of June she was hospitalized. She had had a fever for a few nights but after a few nights she to a turn for the worse He still remembered the conversation with his older sister. … Inu look at her she’s never been like this before. She’s so sweaty even with the ac on this high, she’s burning up and she won’t eat. Go call dad I’m going to call grandma and see if she will drive us to the hospital. Deep down he knew Shannon was right but he also knew how much trouble they would get in if they got to the ER and she just had the flu. But he wouldn’t take a risk on his sister he pulled out his phone and dialed his father’s work. Hello and welcome to AL’s accounting how can I help you today. Hey al this is Inu can you transfer me to my dad’s office. He found himself stuttering as he spoke the idea of losing another family member tearing at him. After 15 minutes of his father yelling at him he heard the knock at the door it was grandma. Inu handed the phone to her she yelled at their father about having to drive all the way out here. After a few more minutes of discussion they went to the hospital they were off to the hospital. …
Sir Sir excuse me sir
Excuse me can I help you he looked over to find a nurse staring at him. He had been standing outside of his sister’s room locked in thought. Can I help you? The nurse growled sarcastically. No I’m sorry Inukami said as he opened the door. His sister was asleep so he decided to sit and listen to his music till she woke up. But it wasn’t long till the nurse came in to check on the strange by who had stood outside of the door for ten minutes. The nurse left a few minutes latter shutting the door quickly causing Miko to stir. With a meager moan she sat up and smiled to see her brother. Thanks for coming in Inu I know how you hate it in here. No it’s no problem at all he retorted. You’re looking so much better Miko. His sister smile faded with a gentle chuckle she said you never could lie very well. He looked down knowing she was right. Her skin was pale and she had lost so much weight her cheeks had sunken in. As he stood their thinking of what to say next the door opened and his father and sister came in still arguing. “I’m doing the best I can” their father snarled. He turned to the two of them and explained that they had to leave. A few hours later they were at home it was a tiny three bedroom apartment. They had move their about a year after Miko had started going to the hospital to save money. It was small and there was always something broken but between Shannon and Inukami they had fixed it up quite a bit. Their father went to his room for a few minutes and then left saying that he would not be back till late. Shannon swore under her breath about him pissing his money away at the bar. Shannon turned to Miko and said that she would help her take a bath. Miko turned to her sister let me say hi to mom first. They walked to the living room where their mother’s shrine waited her smiling picture looking up at them like always. Their mother had passed away shortly after Miko turned two. She was hospitalized in early September. A few weeks later she passed the doctors baffled as to her cause of death. Being five at the time Inukami didn’t really understand what had happened to her he just remembered seeing her at the hospital getting sicker and sicker. After their mother’s passing their grandmother started taking care of them as best as she could but after a few months her age started catching up with her, but as she started slipping Shannon stepped in and started taking care of her younger siblings. Inukami had always been amazed how strong she was. It was long till she was doing all the cooking cleaning. She even took over raising Miko. Inukami helped when he could he would watch Miko so Shannon could take care of the household chores and helped with the chores he was able. In truth Miko didn’t even remember her mother she was just the picture in the shrine. The days were hard but fun during school their grandmother would take care of Miko. When they got home Shannon would start dinner for grandma whose arthritic hands ached at the thought of chopping. She would then watch over the food and cook allowing the kids time to play and study. The two older siblings’ would eat dinner then start cleaning the house as their grandma put Miko to bed. Their father would usually get home sometime after nine reeking of booze. A few years latter Miko entered elementary school and their grandmother stopped coming over every day. A few months after Miko got hospitalized their grandmother passed away from a hit and run accident.
After a few months pass the family’s debt starts to pile up. Their father gathers the Inukami and Shannon into the kitchen and explains that he was selling the house and that they were going to be moving into an apartment. The truth of the matter was the bank was foreclosing on the house but their father was too ashamed to admit it. Inukami and his father took care of the moving. As the days passed Miko seemed to fall further and further into depression. She had been especially close to their grandmother as she had been the only mother she had ever known. As Miko’s depression worsened so did her illness she found it harder and harder to do simple things. After a few months of living at the new apartment she drops out of school. Even with the new apartment the hospital bills begin to pile up again. Their father starts pawning items. Inukami tries his best to help he even started doing some odd jobs around town to help out. Inukami finds that Shannon has dropped out secretly to work a job during the day. she also has a part time job Things get worse and worse all the while Miko gets worse now spending more time at the er then at home. Finely it gets so bad she must stay at the hospital full time she is now eleven. Six months pass after she has been admitted to the hospital their father finally snaps and runs out on the family and on the same night Miko falls into a coma.
At about the same time the girl who would change his life forever was about to have her life changed forever. Ana’s life is hard. She was abused by her stepfather. He dies. She is driving home on a rainy night suddenly there is a kid in front of her car she swerves to miss him but loses control. She starts to get out when she hears a scream “Yami noooo….”
Ages Miko 12 Inu 15 Shannon 17 It’s been a year after their father left and Miko slipped into a coma. Even with their combined income Shannon and Inukami cannot afford to keep her in the hospital. After talking to the nurse and the doctors the decision is made to move her to a state run hospital. Inukami is working nights his grades slip so bad he fails the semester. The doctor talks to Inukami and Shannon tells them that Miko probably won’t make it thru the month.
