Aperio limitations - VanAndelInstitute/virtual-slide-viewer GitHub Wiki
Aperio ScanScope Controller can’t disconnect from DataServer without a restart.
Restarting the ScanScope Controller takes several minutes. Even if we had another instance of eSlide Manager, this would still be an issue for sending slides to different slide repositories.
Aperio uses TIFF file format for whole slide images.
TIFF is an older image format that is incompatible with (cloud) object storage systems, and thus requires more expensive UNIX-like file systems and always-on servers to read them.
Aperio ScanScope only runs on Windows desktop OS.
Windows is very limited compared to Linux in what software can run on it. Also, Windows desktop (i.e. Windows 10) cannot run software that only runs on Windows Server (e.g. site-to-site VPN).
Aperio eSlide Manager licenses are cost prohibitive.
Otherwise, we might simply run another instance of eSM in a more secure environment. Note that the first issue (controller can’t disconnect from DataServer) would still be an issue, though.
