Prerequisites

You should have completed the machining class, ISE 2214, and received your orientation from the Ware Lab assistant manager, Phil, showing you how to use one of the Ware Lab turning machines. This is only supplemental to all of that instruction.

Tips

  • A good rule of thumb for speed is: RPM = 800 / (diameter of workpiece in inches)
    • Please note you should halve this speed for HSS (this assumes carbide tip). This also assumes cutting aluminum, so halve this (potentially again) for cutting steel. Again, this is just a place to get started and not an exact value to get caught up in.
  • Do not use coolant with the carbide insert tools; this will cause a flash freeze and can ruin their physical properties, causing them to break easily. Carbide can handle a lot of heat, trust it.
  • Use automatic feeds, it will make the finish a lot nicer. As for the feed rate, you kind of just have to trial-and-error your way to having a โ€œfeelโ€ for it, sorry.
