internet connectivity testing - VCSFA-MARS/ThinSat-Program GitHub Wiki

Checking that the ThinSat servers are reachable through your internet connection can be a little tricky, especially if you don't feel particularly tech-savvy. We are working on some Space Data Dashboard tools that will make this process much easier. In the meantime, here is a guide to help you test your internet connection

Overview of the Process

We need to be sure whatever Wi-Fi internet connection your xChips use can reach our servers. The easiest way to do this is to connect a computer to the same Wi-Fi internet. Then follow these steps to verify that you can reach our servers.

Instructions for checking on different operating systems:

Apple Mac Computers running OS X

This process is pretty painless on a Mac.

Step 1: Connect to the same Wi-Fi network you plan to use for your xChips. This could be your school's Wi-Fi, a mobile hotspot, or even your phone's personal hotspot!

Step 2: Open your "Network Utility"

This can be found easily with spotlight search (command space or the magnifying glass icon on the system menu bar).

Step 3: Click on the "Port Scan" tab

Step 4: Enter the mqtt server address: mqtt.xinabox.cc

Step 5: Click "Only test ports between" and enter the port ranges 1883 to 1883

Step 6: Click "Scan" and wait for the results.

Success: You should see a message that says Open TCP Port: 1883

Problem: Your scan completes without reporting an open port:

Port Scan has started…

Port Scanning host: 35.185.54.99

Port Scan has completed…

Step 7: Repeat Steps 4 and 5 with the following parameters:

link.xinabox.cc
8441 to 8443

Interpreting Your Results

If you had any of your scans show addresses and ports not open, you will need to look at your internet connection's firewall settings. This is probably a job for your IT department. Refer them to our ThinSat Information for IT page and ask them to get you set up properly.
