ED-4 WORKSHEET

1. Introduction

ED-4 focuses on converting the functions identified in ED-2 into functional clusters and identifying the major subsystems of the selected Mechatronic Perpetual Calendar concept.

Functional clustering groups related functions that work together to perform a particular part of the overall system.

The selected concept consists of four major subsystems:

  1. User Interface Subsystem
  2. Processing and Control Subsystem
  3. Mechanical Display Subsystem
  4. Power Supply Subsystem

2. Activity 2.1 – Functional Clustering

2.1 Functional Clustering

The functions identified in the function tree are grouped into related clusters based on their purpose and interaction within the system.

Subsystem Functions Included
User Interface Subsystem Accept user input, display date, display day, display month and year, display time, display system status, allow manual date/time adjustment
Processing and Control Subsystem Acquire date and time, maintain accurate time, process calendar information, calculate day of week, identify leap year, determine number of days in a month, determine required wheel position, generate motor control commands
Mechanical Display Subsystem Rotate date wheel, position date wheel, find reference/home position, stop wheel at required position, maintain mechanical position and display the selected date
Power Supply Subsystem Store electrical energy, charge battery, regulate voltage, distribute power to controller/display/motor, monitor battery status and reduce unnecessary power consumption

Functional Clustering Explanation

The functions are grouped according to the role they perform in the system.

  • The User Interface Subsystem handles communication between the user and the calendar.
  • The Processing and Control Subsystem performs date/time processing and controls the overall operation.
  • The Mechanical Display Subsystem converts the controller command into physical movement of the date wheel.
  • The Power Supply Subsystem provides and manages electrical power for the entire system.

3. Functional Cluster Diagram

The overall functional relationship between the clusters is:
