Digital Signage - UnionChurchHK/wiki GitHub Wiki
Players are computers, Raspberry Pi devices, that play content (assets). Typically each Display (TV/Monitor) is connected to its own dedicated player.
Groups are a key configuration element inside piSignage and serve three purposes:
- Using groups, multiple players can be grouped together, allowing to schedule the same content to be played on multiple players at the same time by assigning and scheduling a playlist to a particular group.
- Key configuration elements such as resolution, horizontal or vertical deployment of the display, etc.
- Scheduling of playlist(s).
The following groups are defined in the system: Group Purpose UCHKG:ElevatorSignage Displays signage for the displays next to the elevators on each floor. On these displays “Rolling Announcements” are played alongside the Floor Directory and Today’s Event lists. UCHKG:FelowshipHall Displays signage for the displays in the Fellowship Hall using a full screen format. In addition to “Rolling Announcements” content for specific events, e.g. Alpha, etc., can be scheduled instead of the rolling announcement slides.
2.3 Assets All media, images, videos, YouTube streams, etc. are managed centrally as assets in piSignage. From here assigned can be categorised, assigned to playlist and given a validity period during which they should be played.
2.3.1 Categories The categorisation of assets helps to structure and manage assets to e.g. keep track of their purpose, usage, who is responsible to manage them, etc. The following categories are available in this implementation: Category Purpose UCHKG:General Content related to Union Church such as vision, mission, donation, etc. Typically these slides are permanently assigned to the playlist for rolling announcements i.e., they typically have no validity period/date assigned. UCHKG:Events Content related to events that are part of rolling announcements. Slides in this category have typically a validity period assigned to automatically add or remove them from the playlist UCHKG:Today’s Events Content related to the Today’s Events & Floor Directory zone for elevator signage
UCHKG:Alpha Course Content specific to Alpha courses UCHKG:Fellowship Hall Events Content specific to events in the Fellowship Hall i.e., for signage to be displayed during the event UCHKG:Funerals & Weddings Content specific to events related to Funerals & Weddings UCHKG:Emergency Content specific to emergency signage (evactuation)
2.3.2 Validity Each asset can be assigned with a validity, from / to period during which it will be played in all playlists it is assigned to. While the playlist schedule determines when each playlist is being played, the validity period determines the timeframe during which a particular asset is allowed to be played in a playlist.
Examples: 2.3.2.1 Rolling Announcements A slide for a specific event that occurs on 15 December between 1-3pm, should be added to the rolling announcements slides from 1 December until the event has finished. To this end, assign a validity period from 1 – 15 December 3pm to the slide. 2.3.2.2 Events A particular slide should be shown only from 12 – 19 November during Alpha Courses held in the sanctuary on Tuesdays evenings from 6-10pm in addition to other slides that are shown during the Alpha Course as signage for the course.
• Assign a validity from 12 – 19 November to the asset. • Add the asset to the playlist for the Alpha Course for the specific Alpha Course and schedule the playlist to be played every Tuesday from 6-10pm during the duration of the whole Alpha Course, e.g. 5 November – 26 November.
By combining the information from both asset validity and the schedule of the playlist, this particular slide will only be played on 12 & 19 November from 6-10pm.
2.4 Playlists Playlists define which assets are played together and in which order and sets the layout to be applied when playing content.
Playlist Description UCHKG-RollingAnnouncementSlides The main playlist that defines which slides are played as part of the rolling announcements slide set. UCHKG-ElevatorSignage Contains the assets for the Floor Directory and the Today’s Events list in the elevator signage.
