The CESM Model - UU-IMAU/Earth-System-Modelling GitHub Wiki
The Community Earth System Model (CESM) is the most commonly used Earth System Model at IMAU.
Literature
Standard Paper describing the most recent CESM release (CESM2).
Manuals and Documentation
General
CESM is maintained by NCAR. General overview and documentation is found here.
The discussion forum is found here.
A youtube playlist with about 20 presentations from the 2022 CESM tutorial (some general ones, some about specific model components) is here.
Ocean
The Ocean component is the Parallel Ocean Programme (POP), user guide is here. The upcoming CESM3 model will use another ocean component, MOM.
Atmosphere
There are two alternative Atmosphere components.
The Community Atmosphere Model / CAM is simpler and (much) cheaper to run, with no stratospheric chemistry). User guide is here.
The Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model / WACCM has stratospheric chemistry and higher vertical extent.
Both models are similar in their physics, output etc. At IMAU, mostly CAM is used.
Sea Ice
CESM uses the CICE model. Documentation, including a scientific user guide, is here.
Coupler
CESM uses a coupler CIME. A user guide is here, but unfortunately it gives very little description on the actual physics (e.g., ocean-atmosphere fluxes). A scientific guide of the coupler of a much older CESM version is here.
