With the above pause menus in mind, below are some design concepts of the pause screen (created in Pixil):

Preliminary peer user testing indicated that the overall colour scheme of the columns contrasted too heavily with the rest of the screen, so before formal user testing a minor colour change was implemented:

Future Directions
Two suggestions from user testing will form the basis of further developments of the pause screen:
- "its just brown and yellow and would have weird contrast on some levels"
- "As the game goes on, maybe more water fills the pause screen?"
We plan the implement completely different pause menu designs to match different levels, as well as changing the water level to indicate progress in the game.
