User Testing

In order to gain insight on the design of the main menu screen, an online survey was created and distributed.

Results

Question 1

image

Aim:

The aim of this question was to gather opinions on the well-received and poorly-received aspects of the first main menu draft.

Raw Data:

image

Analysis and Call to Action:

In review of the above responses, it was clear that the first design was considered as “too busy”, meaning there were too many things going on at once. The positioning of the title and buttons were also noted as being too close to the island, and the size of the island was too small.

Question 2

image

Aim:

Similarly to the last question, the aim of this question was to gather opinions on the well-received and poorly-received aspects of the second main menu draft.

Raw Data:

image

Analysis and Call to Action:

As seen in the responses, this version of the main menu was received a lot better than the first draft. The concerns about the size of the island, the positioning of the buttons and the clutter were all addressed in this second design. Additionally, it is noted that user’s would like to see the buttons be more prominent, as currently they blend with the water. Finally, the water was said to be “too colourful”, implying that the jarring change between different shades of blue was too much to look at. These concerns will be addressed in the future iterations of the design, creating a less jarring water-scape and allowing the most important aspects of the menu (the buttons and title), to stand out.

Question 3

image

Aim:

This question was designed to choose which menu design our team should move forward with. The respondents were given the opportunity to choose their favourite option.

Raw Data:

image

Analysis and Call to Action:

As seen in the raw data, a majority of the respondents (~70%) chose the second design as their preferred main menu. Hence, the second design, which features a larger island and less aspects, will be used as the main menu screen. The respondents have been given multiple opportunities throughout this survey to voice their opinions regarding how our team could improve this design. We will utilise every aspect of this feedback to ensure that the main menu design continues to improve, not only for this sprint, but into the final sprint as well.

Question 4

image

Aim:

The aim of this question was to allow the respondents to make any final comments about the main screen designs. This data will be integral in determining how we can strive to make the final design an improvement upon the current product.

Raw Data:

image

Analysis and Call to Action:

As described in the question 2 call to action, the concerns regarding the jarring nature of the water will be addressed in the next design iteration. This seemed to be a note made by multiple respondents, which will help us to improve the overall appeal of the game. In future iterations of this design, we will look into adding more scenery onto the island, as well as adding animation. These steps will hopefully address all the feedback provided in this user test.

Question 5

image

Aim:

This is a simple question designed to determine how many respondents would like to see an animation added to the already developed main menu.

Raw Data:

image

Analysis and Call to Action:

In review of the raw data, it is abundantly clear that the overall appeal of the main screen would benefit the integration of animation. This was a very helpful question to ask, as our team is now clear that a main screen animation is of high importance to the potential users of this game. This step will be taken within sprint 3, and will aim to be refined in sprint 4.

Future Testing Plans

In terms of animation for the main menu, our team is adamant on user testing in sprint 4. We want to ensure that the animation is well-received, as it is a large aspect of the games interface. The feedback we receive throughout that user testing will help us to make the necessary changes to not only the animations, but the static main menu screen. This secondary user testing will also allow more respondents to voice their opinions, in case they were unable to in the previous phase of user testing.
