Design Inspiration and Research
For the first sprint, the goal was to design the most basic enemy weapon. After communicating with the enemy's team about the enemy they wanted to design for sprint one, it was clear that the enemy type of a 'gym buff guy' would use some kind of gym equipment as their weapon. Therefore, firstly, I came up with different ideas for potential gym equipment the enemies could use. From this, it was decided from sprint one we would build a dumbbell weapon.
After communicating with the enemies team around colours and what would best match their enemy I started my user testing with a green/teal-coloured dumbbell. Some of the iterations I went through to develop my design and shown below.
The final Dumbbell (shown on the right), has a darker gradient overlay to give a more menacing look as the teal colour is more vibrant in the colour scheme.
User Testing
I conducted an interview-style user testing to evaluate that the drawing was clear and the purpose of the weapon was evident to the player. I also wanted to collect information on how a player might perceive the weapon to be used and the damage it might cause.
Based on the user feedback, it was clear that the colours were confusing as it felt more 'happy' and 'calm' and did not belong to an enemy but rather the hero. Hence, in considering this feedback and still keeping with the colour scheme of the game and enemy design I choose a dark purple colour.
Future Developments
For future sprints, more advanced or different enemies might need different weapons. For instance, a more powerful enemy will possibly require a more powerful exercises/gym-based equipment weapons such as a larger barbell or dumbbell. In the ideation stage it was also thought that perhaps for a simple or weaker enemy, they would throw foam rollers with minimal damage to the player's health. This would be a challenging but fun attack animation to implement into the game.
