User Testing

Survey: https://forms.gle/YWSqjvXmDZHj49sx9

By collating the sprint 1 designs and the sprint 2 designs in a survey, 19 reponses were recorded, allowing us to analyse the data and determine how we could improve this design further.

The survey included 5 multiple choice questions, but only questions 3 to 5 were based on the design of the crafting menu itself, whilst the others were based on the crafting table design. Questions 3 to 5 will be analysed below, extracting the feedback provided by the responses, and outlining the action we will take to improve this intial design.

3. Below is the intial design for the crafting menu. Do you believe that this design could be improved to better represent the theme?

In this question, the survey-taker was given an image of the sprint 1 crafting menu. The options for answers were yes or no. 18 out of the 19 responses recorded "yes" as their answer, as displayed in the following pie chart.

  • This feedback highlights that a new design for the crafting menu was necessary, seeing as 94% of survey-takers thought its design could better match the theme of the game
  • Hence, this task was considered important to complete in sprint 2

4. This is an updated design for the crafting menu. How would you improve this design?

In this question, the survey-taker was given an image of the intial updated design (the scroll), and were given multiple options in which they could further improve the design. There was also an option for the survey-taker to give their own suggestions, in the format of a short-response answer. The 3 pre-decided suggestions were; Changing the colour scheme to better match the crafting table (darker browns instead of oranges), changing the layout of the scroll (where the buttons are located, for example), and ditching the scroll design and creating something new.

  • As outlined in the above data, 14/19 survey-takers agreed that the colour scheme of the design should be aligned more with the crafting table. Hence, the updated design will include deeper browns and less oranges/yellows. This will ensure that the scroll looks like it connects to the crafting table, and that there is continuity between the two items.
  • Additionally, 0 responses indicated a need to change the layout of the menu. This demonstrates that the current layout allows users to easily navigate the menu and utilise its features.
  • 2/19 responders thought that the scroll idea should be removed, and an entire new design should be created. Since a large majority of survey-takers (89%) did not indicate a desire to change the scroll theme/idea, this will not change in the updated design.

In the short-response section, we recieved the following feedback:

Maybe making it a little bigger

The scroll is a much better design, but maybe adding some new colours or details to it. Either to fit the plumber theme (scroll edges are dirty / gross) or greek regalia

This looks good. The inventory button looks a bit strange though because it doesn't have a shadow like the other buttons.

  • In response to this feedback, the next iteration of the menu will utilise a more meaningful colour scheme (as discussed above). Additionally, the team will discuss whether we will include details that are greek regalia or plumber themed, which can be implemented in future sprints. Finally, the last piece of feedback will be taken into consideration, and will ensure that the new colour scheme can effectively demonstrate that the darker shade underneath the button means it can be pushed (changing the page, for example)

5. Would you like to see an animation of the scroll opening when users click on the crafting table in future sprints?

This question was added to the survey to determine a possible animation for the crafting menu. The options for this question were yes or no. As seen in the following pie chart, 16/19 reponders indicated that they would want to see an animation of the scroll opening in future sprints.

  • In response to this feedback, an animation will be developed at the start of sprint 3, and will be user tested to ensure that there is general concensus regarding its implementation into the game.
