Sword Design Process

Old Design

User testing feedback:

  • Did not look like pixel art
  • Way too short & small
  • More like a miniature knife
  • No incentive to buy other than stats

Inspirations

For main inspiration, I looked mostly at World of Warcraft swords. As I wanted to design a bigger and more formidable sword, WoW already had some from which I could draw ideas from. I mainly used this as a guideline for how thick and long the sword should be.

Design Process – New Sword

  1. First iteration of sword outline
  2. Second iteration of sword outline
  3. Third iteration of sword outline
  4. Basic fill in
  5. Gem added (design felt empty in middle)
  6. Black outline added to adhere to design guidelines
  7. Tilted Sword - user testing told us people preferred the tilted design in the final framed product

Key Improvements:

  • Pixel art design
  • Bigger than previous sword, but not as big as Trident – size adjusted to fit better
  • More complex and interesting design – adding incentive to buy – users reported they are more inclined to buy it as they would like their character to wield it (liking the aesthetics, not just the added stats)
