Dialogue
This dialogue will rely on having saves so that the game knows what dialogue to display when reaching certain points in the game. Will also choose dialogue at random from a list of possible choices in order to make sure that each run does not have the exact same thing being said each time.
The dialogue will play during the tutorial, boss interactions, boss defeats and map changes. Since this is the main form of providing the player with the storyline, it is important to find a balance between keeping the player interested, allowing the player to actually play the game and providing a thorough backstory.
Dialogue Plan
The plan that is currently in place for the implementation of the dialogue is to show the dialogue when the player first loads into the map as well as when the player is reaching the boss room. This allows for the backstory of the map to be delivered without breaking up the flow of the game drastically. The dialogue will be between the main character and the boss that inhabits the map. To reduce the amount of repetition, subsequent encounters between the boss and the room will be much slower with skippable options.
To make the encounter between the boss and the main character feel more intense, movement cutscenes to the boss room where the player does not need to input will be used. This can be used in conjunction with the text boxes. The dialogue when encountering the boss will also allow the player to mentally prepare themselves.
Tutorial Room
Story
The player is to start in a Prison, patrolled by Elves, where he is to escape to embark on his journey to Asgard and Valhalla. The player has been trapped by the God's due to his hubris and arrogance. The Tutorial room will be an extension of the prison and help guide the player through all of the events that the player may encounter during the game.
The controls, story and information about the game will be provided by a prisoner NPC. Information that needs to be included in the tutorial are the basic controls at the very least. Since the tutorial is a one time event, there is no need for subsequent encounters with the prisoner. If a player willingly goes through the tutorial again, repeating the controls may be their aim.
Prisoner Introduction
- Prisoner: "Hey pssst, it's nice to see a new face here."
- Player: "What!? Where am I?"
- Prisoner: "Keep it down! He'll hear you."
- Player: "Who'll hear me!?"
- Prisoner: "The Elf Boss. What did you do to him anyway?"
- Player: "I have no idea who that is. I need to get out of here. Ragnarok hasn't come yet has it?"
- Prisoner: "Good luck with that. Why do you think I'm still here."
- Player: "Cause you're not me."
- Prisoner: "You remind me a lot of my younger self. I'll help you. Come over to me."
Walk Dialogue
- Prisoner: "Easy there buddy, your legs may not be like they used to be."
- Prisoner: "Listen closely cause I'm not repeating myself. Use WASD to get around. Once you're ready, come back over to me."
Dash Dialogue
- Prisoner: "To get around quickly, press SHIFT to sprint around and CAPS_LOCK to dash. Take it easy though, you'll tire yourself out. Get back to me once you're ready to escape."
Attack Dialogue
- Prisoner: "Use SPACE BAR or Left Click to swing your axe. Careful though, this is the only thing that won't attack back."
- Prisoner: "User Q or Right Click to activate your weapons power, each weapon has one and they're all different. You should test it out before heading off into battle."
Enemies Dialogue
- Prisoner: "Be careful of some of the enemies here. I've seen them all with my very own eyes."
- Prisoner: "The warriors will chase you down till their deaths while the archers snipe you from the shadows."
Traps Dialogue
- Prisoner: "The place is littered with traps, be careful where you're stepping."
Exit Dialogue

-
Player: "This time will be different."
Loki's Hell
Loki Introduction First Meeting
- Loki: "Who is this to enter my area? Oh it's you. Did you think that you with your hubris and pride could just so easily join the ranks of those in Valhalla? Nay I have placed you in that cell so that you might reflect on your deeds and learn some humility, I must have overestimated the elves. If you do however think that you can face off against me and those on the journey to Valhalla, then the door lies open. Know this though, it is a fools errand and with every failure you only prove all the more unworthy of Valhalla. Better to sit here and think on your deeds".
Loki Introduction After Boss Defeat
-
Loki: "I underestimated you but now I can get my revenge."
-
Loki: "You bested me last time but we now know what we're dealing with."
-
Loki: "I'm still not very impressed."
Loki Introduction After Player Defeat
-
Loki: “I told you it was a fools errand. Stay here and give up on your ideas of making it to me”
-
Loki: “No matter how many times you try, your fate will always be the same”
-
Loki: “Come now, have you not embarrassed yourself enough? Accept your fate and stay”
-
Loki: “Still trying? How quaint”
Loki Encounter First Meeting
- Loki: "It's nice to see you in the flesh... for now.
Loki Encounter After Boss Defeat
-
Loki: "I'm glad I get my revenge.
-
Loki: "The other Gods must have been playing tricks on me. Not this time though."
Loki Encounter After Player Defeat
-
Loki: "How do you want me to kill you this time?"
-
Loki: "I'm baffled by how you make it this far."
Thor's Dialogue (Outdoor)
Thor Introduction First Meeting
- Player: "I'm finally free from Loki, the heat from Hell and the chains within the prison. I'm nearly there. I can feel it"
- Player: "It feels like home here, what I'm use to. The soft, grassy fields and the chilling breeze.
- Player: "I wonder who else stands before me on my journey. They aren't ready to face my wrath."
Thor Introduction After Boss Defeat
-
Player: "It was a breeze last time, I don't see it being any different."
-
Player: "Finally back in my element, Thor is nothing compared to me."
-
Player: "I have to go through this again... What a waste of time."
Thor Introduction After Player Defeat
-
Player: "This place feels different, not like home but I'm ready this time"
-
Player: "Thor may have bested me this time, but he's incompetent, unwilling to learn."
-
Player: "I've seen his skills, he got lucky last time."
Thor Encounter First Meeting
- Thor: Ahh, I see that you've made it past my brother. I can't say I'm too surprised though. He was never really one for real fights, he always much preferred making others fight and lurking around instead. I on the other hand, excel at battle. Come! Test your will against the power of a true god and see how you fare!
Thor Encounter After Boss Defeat
-
I see that you've come back for a second time. An error on your part. I shall make sure you don't defeat me again.
-
Ahhh you wish to fight me again? Come, you'll find me a willing opponent.
-
Still trying to make it to Valhalla? You'll have to make it past me again.
-
We really need to stop meeting like this, maybe instead we can meet in Valhalla before long. Until then however, we fight!
-
Ah, hello once again warrior. Did you wish to clash with me once again? Very well, I am happy to oblige.
Thor Encounter After Player Defeat
-
What purpose does it serve to try again? I cannot be bested in combat. Learn to accept your limits. It is unbecoming of you to keep trying
-
What? Back again? Allow me to send you back to whence you came.\
-
Your stubbornness is noteworthy, it is however also ugly. Learn to accept when you are bested.
Odin's Dialogue (Asgard)
Odin Introduction First Meeting
- Player: "So this is where I belong, the golden statues and pristine white walls. I could get use to this but I am not yet worthy for a place here."
- Player: "I cannot live here with those who belittled me and locked me away. This will be mine. And mine only.
Odin Introduction After Boss Defeat
-
Player: "The old man didn't know what was coming for him. I can't wait to relive this joy."
-
Player: "More time in this golden palace. I could live here forever."
-
Player: "The curse on me may have been a blessing. Battles for the rest of my life."
Odin Introduction After Player Defeat
-
Player: "I couldn't see from the shine of the walls. His eye patch must've helped him"
-
Player: "Good skills for an old man. I'm impressed."
-
Player: "I was taught the elderly should be respected. Not this time."
Odin Encounter First Meeting
- Greetings Warrior, it is impressive that you have made it this far however now you face a god of pure power and so this is where you shall fail. Perhaps after being put down quickly you will finally accept your fate and finally and finally give up on your fools quest. Come, let us fight and I will send you back to where you belong.
Odin Encounter After Boss Defeat
-
Why are you back? Just because you can?
-
What are you doing here again? Valhalla awaits.
-
Are you really still that eager to battle? even with Valhalla now yours to roam? So be it.
Odin Encounter After Player Defeat
-
Why have you come back for a second time? The result will only be the same. You - sent back to the beginning.
-
Your persistence is noteworthy. It is however folly as well. You shall not make it through. Give up now.
-
Just how many times will you try? Failing each time. Your hubris led you here, and yet you cling to it still.
Defeating Odin First Meeting
- You have defeated the best Asgard has to offer! No mortal is worthier than you. Perhaps no god... Valhalla awaits you.
Defeating Odin After Boss Defeat
-
Beaten by a mortal twice. Maybe, I should retire...
-
Player: Is this the king of gods? The gods must be weak!
-
Player: King of gods? I have seen peasants who fight better.
Defeating Odin After Player Defeat
-
Revenge must taste sweet. Valhalla awaits you.
-
They say revenge is best served cold. They won't say that anymore. Valhalla awaits you.
-
Must be your lucky day. Walk through the gates before your luck changes.
