I found this image where the mage was holding a staff. I really liked this idea for a weapon as staffs are commonly used by magical characters in popular films (see examples below), so users should be able to immediately see the weapon and understand that the boss is magical even if it is not explained through a dialogue prompt. Furthermore, as staffs are very tall, they will be very visible in the game (it will be clear what the boss is holding). Contrastingly, a small Harry-Potter style wand, would be much less visible; if users could not see the wand, they may not have context for why the elf can do magic which would lead to confusion.
Additionally, a staff could also be used for a melee attack, if we wished, as well as for shooting magical projectiles.
