Enemies user testing and test plan 1 - UQdeco2800/2021-ext-studio-1 GitHub Wiki

Background

Due to the dependence on other teams’ work, the testing is based on the original game engine and game content.

Purpose

For this user test, our main purpose was to get users' thoughts and feedback on how the enemy looked and asked for some further suggestions. After that, we will analyze user feedback and improve our design based on it.

Process

  • We conducted user tests following these steps
  • We wrote some interview questions based on the enemies we had already designed
  • Show the pictures of our design to our users and talk to them about the questions we made
  • Take notes of the user's thoughts and feedback during the conversation (e.g. In addition to recording the answers to the questions, we also need to record the tone or expression of the users after seeing each of our designs)
  • Collate and analyze users' feedback and iterate on our design
  • The order and content of the questions may be changed and adjusted as appropriate depending on the course of the conversation.

Key questions we asked were

  • What do you think about our first/ second/ third enemy design?
  • Do you like or dislike the design we did?
  • Which graphic style and art style do you like?
  • Which part of the design do you think we should improve?
  • Do you have any suggestions on how to modify it?

Results

User1

Thoughts about the enemies

  • He prefers thriller-style enemies rather than cute ones. He thought the pixel format is suitable for the whole game style.

Suggested improvements

  • The dragon body colour is too dark to see the edge. The dragon can have more animation such as fire-breathing.
  • The ghost might have a biting-people-animation or It can have more function for interaction. Such as different audio effects and tutorial animation should pop up when the enemy firstly shows up.

User2

Thoughts about the enemies

  • The enemies are cute and the animation of the demon looks good.

Suggested improvements

  • The enemy function should have more kinds such as affecting speed function or affecting scale function. The animation part could have more variation such as left to right rather than up to down.

User3

Thoughts about the enemies

  • For the dragon one, she thinks it is a bit hard to see the body and the wings. Also, the gif picture of it is flat.
  • For the ghost one, she thinks it is well designed and fits my impression of the enemy.
  • For the demon, same as the dragon, the gif is a little bland.

Suggested improvements

  • The dragon can change the colour of its body or wings to make them brighter or lighter. She thinks we can also change the colour of the lines.
  • The demon can add a bit more interesting dynamics, such as the purple origin on its head also moving up and down.

User4

Thoughts about the enemies

  • She likes the design of the dragon, but it is too cute to fit the stereotype of enemies or villains.
  • Have no idea about the ghost.
  • She likes the demon’s design. She thinks it has rich colours and looks good together.

Suggested improvements

  • She said we may need to add some scary ingredients, like tusks or other things.
  • She thinks the colours of ghosts can be richer, such as the colour of the wings.

Summary

Most of the users we interviewed generally agreed with our design, although there were some changes and adjustments we needed to make, on the whole, it was good. We recorded user feedback and will analyze it in the next sprint and iterate on our design based on the results.
