Enemies user testing - UQdeco2800/2021-ext-studio-1 GitHub Wiki

Purpose

The purpose of this user test is to understand the user's ideas about our newly designed enemy (appearance and style). In addition, there are users' views on the new animation of each enemy, and what ideas and suggestions users have on the experience of the enemy in the game at this stage.

Process

We conducted user tests following these steps

  • We wrote some interview questions based on the last enemy we had already designed
  • Show the pictures and animation preview of our design to our users and talk to them about the questions we made
  • Take notes of the user's thoughts and feedback during the conversation (e.g. In addition to recording the answers to the questions, we also need to record the tone or expression of the users after seeing each of our designs)
  • Run the game and show what will they see and do for our game to the users
  • Introduce the concept of the game to the user
  • Introduce the user to how to play the game
  • Let the user experience
  • In the process of experience let the user say their real-time feelings about the game and enemies
  • Conduct interviews with users and get feedback
  • Collate and analyze users' feedback and iterate on our design The order and content of the questions may be changed and adjusted as appropriate depending on the course of the conversation.

Key questions we asked were

  • What do you think of the design of the new enemy?
  • Conflict with existing game styles and enemy styles?
  • Does the new enemy animation make the game more interesting?
  • How do you think new enemies performed in the game?
  • Do you think the enemy's movements make sense?
  • What do you like/dislike about them?
  • Do you prefer the enemy to move randomly or in a fixed direction?
  • Is there anything confusing about how the enemy works? (If so, in which section?)
  • What else do you think needs to be revised? Or any suggestions?

Result

User1

  • I think the design of the new enemy is very good. It is also pixel style. It is unified with other enemy styles and will not appear abrupt in the overall game screen.
  • The newly added enemy animation is really more interesting, which makes the picture richer than the previous static effect.
  • New enemies make me feel good in the game. Each kind of enemy is different, many kinds.
  • The enemy's mode of movement is relatively single, but it is also good.
  • I think it's very good. No problem. I really like everything. The green enemy is lovely.
  • I prefer random movement, which makes the game more interesting.
  • There are so many enemies that it becomes difficult to win. Consider reducing the number of enemies. I mean, reduce the number of enemies of each kinda little.

User2

  • The design is good and looks scarier than the other three enemies.
  • No conflict, the style of the game and all enemies is pixel style, which looks unified as a whole.
  • Adding animation makes the picture richer, but the change frequency of animation is too fast, which makes people a little dazzling.
  • The new enemy is good in the game. I like it.
  • The enemy's movements are easy to understand, but the number of enemies is too many, which makes people a little nervous in the game.
  • The enemy's operation is very simple. I think it's OK.
  • I prefer enemies to move in a fixed trajectory, it's less chaotic.
  • Reduce the number of enemies. The animation can be more refined.

User3

  • I think the new enemy's design is good.
  • No conflict, the overall style is pixel style, very good.
  • Adding animation is a good choice, which can make the image of the enemy fuller.
  • I think the new enemy is no different from other enemies except in appearance. It's very good and relatively unified.
  • As I said above, the enemy's movement is relatively single, and you can add a little trajectory. But maintaining the status quo is also a good choice.
  • I like it very much. There are no other problems for the time being.
  • Both okay. Random trajectories are more challenging.
  • The enemy's attacks and actions are easy to understand and there is no confusion.
  • There are no other suggestions.

User4

  • The colour of the new enemy is very conspicuous and very good.
  • I don't think it's a conflict. The overall style is pixel style, and the colours are relatively rich. It won't be confused with the * background colour.
  • The enemy's animation is very good, but it needs to be refined. Sometimes there are some strange squares.
  • Enemy movements are clear and easy to understand.
  • The pattern of the new enemy is consistent with that of other enemies.
  • I think the random movement is more interesting, but it can make the game looks very confusing. You might need to reduce the total number of enemies if you want to be random.
  • I like it very much. All four enemies are lovely.
  • There is no question yet.
  • Can you add a little introduction to monsters? Everything else was very good.

Conclusion

After summarizing and analyzing user feedback, we can find that users are satisfied with our enemy's design, and the enemy's style and game are unified with the whole game. About the enemy movement, most users prefer random movement. We will discuss and design this further to make sure it works. In addition, some users also put forward some suggestions, such as making the enemy's animation more delicate, increasing the change of the enemy's trajectory and reducing the number of each kind of enemy. We will discuss and iterate our design according to the user's feedback, so as to achieve it in sprint 4.
