Survival Cards

This page documents the Sprint 2 Survival card set implemented by Team 6 Member 4.

Task: #156 — Survival Cards and Art/Asset Integration

Related pages:

The Survival set focuses on defence, healing, recovery and status removal. The four cards are designed to provide different survival options rather than acting as simple numerical replacements for the Sprint 1 Defend and Bandage cards.

The Four Cards

ID Name Cost Type Rarity Target Effects
makeshift_shelter Makeshift Shelter 2 SKILL UNCOMMON SELF BLOCK 7, HEAL 3
rubble_barricade Rubble Barricade 2 SKILL UNCOMMON SELF BLOCK 12
emergency_salve Emergency Salve 2 SKILL UNCOMMON SELF HEAL 10
purify Purify 1 SKILL UNCOMMON SELF CLEANSE 1

All four card definitions are stored in cards.json.

Their artwork is stored under:

source/core/assets/images/cards/

using the matching card ID as the filename.

Examples:

  • makeshift_shelter.png
  • rubble_barricade.png

Card Descriptions

Makeshift Shelter

Cost: 2
Target: SELF
Effects: Gain 7 Block and heal 3 HP.

Makeshift Shelter combines defence and recovery in one card.

Compared with playing Defend and Bandage separately:

  • Defend + Bandage costs 2 energy
  • gives 5 Block + 6 Heal
  • requires two cards

Makeshift Shelter also costs 2 energy, but gives:

  • 7 Block
  • 3 Heal
  • using only one card

The card therefore trades some healing for stronger immediate defence and better card economy.

Rubble Barricade

Cost: 2
Target: SELF
Effect: Gain 12 Block.

Rubble Barricade is a high-defence Survival card intended for turns where the player expects heavy incoming damage.

Compared with playing two Defend cards:

  • two Defend cards cost 2 energy and give 10 Block
  • Rubble Barricade costs 2 energy and gives 12 Block using one card

Its main advantage is strong defence and card economy.

Emergency Salve

Cost: 2
Target: SELF
Effect: Heal 10 HP.

Emergency Salve is a higher-cost recovery card that provides a large amount of healing in a single play.

Compared with Bandage:

  • one Bandage costs 1 energy and heals 6 HP
  • two Bandage cards cost 2 energy and heal 12 HP
  • Emergency Salve costs 2 energy and heals 10 HP using only one card

The card therefore gives more healing than a single Bandage, but 2 less healing than two Bandage cards for the same total energy cost. Its main advantage is card economy: the player can make one strong recovery play using a single card.

Purify

Cost: 1
Target: SELF
Effect: CLEANSE

Purify removes negative status effects from the player rather than directly providing Block or healing.

The current implementation removes:

  • POISON
  • VULNERABLE
  • FEEBLE

It does not remove positive effects such as STRENGTH, and it preserves heal-over-time (HEAL) effects.

This gives the Survival set a defensive option that is different from simply increasing HP or Block.

Set Design

The four cards cover different survival situations:

Card Main Role
Makeshift Shelter Mixed defence and recovery
Rubble Barricade Strong immediate defence
Emergency Salve Strong immediate healing
Purify Negative-status removal

The set is designed so that the cards have different purposes instead of being four numerical variations of the same effect.

A useful interaction within the set is using Purify before a recovery or defence card when the player is affected by a negative status.

For example:

  1. Use Purify to remove negative effects.
  2. Use Makeshift Shelter for mixed defence and healing, or Emergency Salve for stronger recovery.

CLEANSE Effect

CLEANSE was introduced for Purify.

Current behaviour:

Property Behaviour
Duration Instant effect
usesDuration() false
duration Must be 0
Valid target SELF
Effect value Positive activation value; not a stack count
Purify value 1; used only as an activation marker, not as the number of stacks removed
Removes POISON, VULNERABLE, FEEBLE
Keeps STRENGTH and HoT HEAL

CLEANSE is integrated with card validation, effect resolution, player-state integration and combat handling.

The implementation does not rely on the status-duration tick lifecycle because the statuses are removed immediately.

Testing

The Survival cards and CLEANSE implementation were verified using the existing card system and additional unit tests.

Relevant test coverage includes:

  • CardValidatorTest
  • EffectExecutorTest
  • Team7PlayerStateAdapterTest
  • CombatStatsComponentTest

The complete core test suite was run from the source/ directory:

./gradlew :core:test

Result:

BUILD SUCCESSFUL

The tests verify that:

  • CLEANSE is accepted on SELF
  • CLEANSE resolves through the effect executor
  • the Team 7 player-state adapter applies the cleanse
  • POISON, VULNERABLE, and FEEBLE are removed
  • STRENGTH is preserved
  • the four Survival card configurations load through the existing card system

Artwork

The four Survival cards use the shared Team 6 Sprint 2 artwork standard:

  • 1024 × 768 px
  • 4:3 landscape
  • PNG format
  • pixel-art illustration
  • illustration only
  • no card name baked into the image
  • no energy cost baked into the image
  • no description baked into the image
  • no type, rarity, border, icon, or rules text baked into the image

Card information is displayed by the game UI rather than being permanently included in the artwork.

The four Survival assets on task/survival-cards-art-assets have been regenerated to this standard.

See: Card Art Specification

Current Status

The four Survival card configurations and artwork have been implemented on the Member 4 task branch.

The CLEANSE effect and its associated tests have also been implemented.

The complete :core:test suite passes successfully.

Remaining integration work includes:

  • final shared card-art consistency review
  • full official-card asset audit
  • in-game display verification
  • hover/info UI verification
  • final in-game screenshots
  • final documentation evidence
  • final integration into the Team 6 Sprint 2 feature branch

Upgrade Status

No upgraded variants of the four Survival cards are included in the current delivery.

Any future upgraded Survival cards should follow the final agreed card-upgrade contract rather than introducing a separate upgrade system within this component.
