PERTINENT INFORMATION ABOUT 3D PRINTER 1 - U-Div-Engg-Exploration-Odd-26-27/Repo-08 GitHub Wiki
WHAT IS A 3D PRINTER?
A 3D printer is a machine that creates three-dimensional objects from a digital design by adding material layer by layer. It is mainly used to make prototypes, models, and small parts quickly and accurately.

BASIC WORKING PRINCIPLE
The working of a basic FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printer can be explained in the following steps:
- A 3D model is created using CAD software.
- The model is imported into slicing software.
- The slicer divides the model into thin layers and generates G-code.
- The G-code is sent to the printer's controller.
- The extruder heats the plastic filament.
- The melted material is deposited through a nozzle.
- The printer moves the nozzle along the required X, Y, and Z axes.
- Each layer cools and joins with the previous layer.
- This process continues until the complete object is produced.
IMPORTANT PRINTING PARAMETERS
The quality and speed of printing depend on several parameters:
- Layer height – Thickness of each printed layer.
- Print speed – Speed at which the printer moves while printing.
- Nozzle temperature – Temperature required to melt the filament.
- Bed temperature – Temperature of the build plate when required.
- Infill percentage – Amount of material inside the object.
- Infill pattern – Pattern used for the internal structure.
- Wall thickness – Thickness of the outer walls.
- Print orientation – Direction in which the object is placed on the build plate.
MAIN PARTS OF THE 3D PRINTING
FRAME-
Supports all the components and provides a rigid structure.
Filament
Acts as the raw material used to make the object.
Extruder
Feeds the filament toward the nozzle.
Nozzle
Melts and deposits the filament layer by layer.
Heated Bed / Build Plate
Supports the object while it is being printed.
Stepper Motors
Move the print head or bed along the X, Y and Z axes.
# Guide Rails / Rods
Guide the moving parts smoothly and accurately.
Controller Board
Controls motors, heaters, sensors and the overall printing process
Heating Element
Heats the nozzle to melt the filament.
Temperature Sensor
Measures the temperature of the nozzle and heated bed.
Power Supply
Provides electrical power to the printer.
Endstop Sensors
Help the printer detect the limits and position of its moving axes.
Display / Control Panel
Allows the user to control and monitor the printer.
Cooling Fan
Cools the printed material and helps maintain proper printing temperature.

Study of Existing 3D Printers and Available Resources
By observing existing 3D printers, online products, and components available in the college laboratory, we identified the following features and working methods.
- Filament Material
Most FDM 3D printers use thermoplastic materials such as PLA and ABS. These materials are supplied in the form of filament rolls and are melted to produce 3D objects.
- Printing Mechanism
The printer creates objects by depositing melted plastic in thin layers. Each layer is placed over the previous one until the complete model is formed.
- Structural Design
The printer structure is designed to hold all the components in their correct positions. A properly assembled structure reduces unwanted vibrations and improves printing accuracy.
- Motor and Movement
Stepper motors are commonly used to control the movement of the print head and print bed. Their controlled movement helps the printer produce objects according to the digital design.
- Temperature Control
Temperature control is important for melting the filament and maintaining proper printing conditions. Sensors are used to monitor the temperature of the nozzle and, where applicable, the heated bed.
- Software and Design
3D models are created using CAD software and converted into printable instructions using slicing software. These instructions guide the printer during the manufacturing process.
- Power Supply
A suitable power supply provides the electrical energy required to operate the motors, heating elements, and electronic components.
