Q4. What components/sub-components are needed?

The following components and sub-components are required for the design and development of an FDM 3D printer.

Mechanical Components

  1. Frame – Provides the main structural support for all the printer components.
  1. Linear Rails / Linear Rods – Guide the moving parts in a straight path.
  1. Belts and Pulleys – Transfer the rotational motion of the motors into linear movement along the required axis.
  1. Lead Screws – Convert the rotational motion of the motor into controlled linear movement, mainly for the Z-axis.
  1. Print Bed – Provides the surface on which the printed object is formed.
  1. Bed Support – Holds the print bed firmly and allows it to move when required.
  1. Extruder – Feeds the filament towards the hotend.
  1. Hotend – Heats the filament so that it can be deposited through the nozzle.
  1. Nozzle – Deposits the melted filament onto the print bed in thin layers.
  1. Cooling Fan – Helps cool the printed material and printer components.

Electronic Components

  1. Stepper Motors – Provide controlled rotational movement for the X, Y and Z axes and extrusion.
  1. Controller Board – Controls the motors, heaters, fans and sensors according to the printing instructions.
  1. Stepper Motor Drivers – Control the operation and movement of the stepper motors.
  1. Thermistors / Temperature Sensors – Measure the temperature of the hotend and heated bed.
  1. Power Supply – Provides electrical power to the controller, motors, heaters and other electronic components.
  1. End Stops / Limit Switches – Detect the position limits of the moving axes.
  1. Wiring and Connectors – Connect the different electrical and electronic components.

Software Components

  1. Firmware – Controls the hardware of the printer and interprets the printing commands.

  2. Slicing Software – Converts a 3D model into instructions that the printer can follow.

  3. 3D Modelling Software – Used to create or modify the digital 3D model before printing.

Interaction Between Components

The controller receives printing instructions from the firmware. The stepper motors move the printer along the required axes using belts, pulleys and lead screws. The extruder pushes filament into the hotend, where it is heated and deposited through the nozzle. The print bed supports the object while it is built layer by layer. Temperature and position sensors provide information to the controller for proper operation.

Q6. What direct solutions are available for the need statement?

The following are existing 3D printers available in the market and were studied as direct solutions for the proposed 3D printer.

  1. Creality Ender 3 – A popular FDM 3D printer that uses a Cartesian motion system. It consists of a frame, stepper motors, belts, lead screws, extruder, hotend, nozzle and print bed.

  2. Bambu Lab A1 – An FDM 3D printer designed for easy operation and automated calibration. It uses controlled movement of the print head and print bed to produce objects layer by layer.

  4. Prusa MK4S – An FDM 3D printer designed for accurate and reliable printing. It uses a controlled motion system, extrusion system, heated print bed and automatic calibration features.

Conclusion

The study of these existing market solutions helped us understand the commonly used frame structures, motion mechanisms, extrusion systems, print beds, electronic components and control systems. These solutions can be used as references while developing our proposed 3D printer.

Observations from Online Market and College Laboratory

The following observations were made by studying existing 3D printers, online products, components and available resources.

  1. 3D Printer Frame
Most FDM 3D printers use a rigid frame made from aluminium profiles or similar structural materials. A strong frame helps maintain stability during printing.

  2. Motion System
Belts, pulleys, linear rods or rails and lead screws are commonly used to move the print head or print bed accurately along the required axes.

  3. Extrusion System
Existing printers use an extruder, hotend and nozzle to feed, melt and deposit thermoplastic filament layer by layer.

  4. Electronic Control System
3D printers require a controller board, stepper motors, motor drivers, temperature sensors and power supply to control the printing process.

  5. Print Bed and Heating System
The print bed provides a surface for the object to be printed. Many FDM printers use a heated bed to improve adhesion and printing quality.

Conclusion

These observations helped us understand the commonly used components, materials, mechanisms and electronic systems in existing 3D printers. They will be useful while selecting suitable components for our proposed design.
