Setting up a Bluetooth Terminal (Obsolete) - Tympan/Docs GitHub Wiki

See Getting Started with TympanRemote App for relevant information on Connecting via Bluetooth.

This documentation works through the steps to set up a Bluetooth Terminal on an Android device. A Nexus 9, Android version 6.0 was used in this tutorial. Modify steps as needed for other devices.

  1. Select and install the Bluetooth Terminal app
  2. Connect the Tympan to the Terminal

Select the Bluetooth Terminal

Go to the Play Store and search Bluetooth Serial Terminal. You may choose any app you like, however after trying out a few, we currently recommend "Bluetooth/Terminal Graphics".

This app is free, and unfortunately does have some advertising.

Install the app then select the short cut icon on your desktop to open the application.

Connect the Tympan to the Terminal

Connect Tympan to your Android Device

Before the Tympan can connect with the Terminal, it must be first connected to your Android device.

Go to the Bluetooth Settings on your device to connect. The Tympan should show up under available devices as an 8 digit serial. All serials will most likely begin with "RNBT".

Your device may give you the option to rename this pairing. This is your choice, however when connecting to the Terminal, the device will still show up as the serial number.

Connect the Tympan to the Terminal

The following will example the process of the *Bluetooth Graphics* serial terminal. If using a different terminal, some of the steps may be slightly different.

When first opening this Terminal, the graphics page will appear. The data created by the Tympan is not currently compatible with the graphing, but this could change in the future. Select the upper left menu drop down to switch between Terminal/Graph and to Connect to Device.

Once connected and on the Terminal page, select the text field to reveal the keyboard. Type the letter "h" and hit send to reveal the help menu.

Using the available commands, you can now communicate with the Tympan. For example, selecting the lower case "k" will increase the gain and upper case "K" will decrease the gain.

Play around with some of the commands and have fun!
