Content reviews: What makes a good slow movie? - TomWhitwell/SlowMovie GitHub Wiki
It's hard to predict what will work well as a Slow Movie and what won't. I haven't watched all of these all the way though, so add your impressions and recommendations below.
2001: A Space Odyssey 5/5
Heavily featured in Bryan's original article and works brilliantly — beautiful image after beautiful image.
Isle of Dogs 5/5
Wonderful, every frame is beautiful and crisp and full of little details.
La Jetée 4/5
Extremely striking and distinctive high-contrast photography. The version I found has burnt-in Spanish subtitles which is a bit odd but adds a bit of mystery!
The Nightmare Before Christmas 5/5
So distinctive and so many little details in every frame, works really well, start it on 1st December and time it to end on 5th January...
Psycho 5/5
Works very well - distinctive high-contrast photography, familiar images, a strongly episodic story that unfurls gradually over a few months.
Metropolis 4/5
Familiar but surprising images, and all those gothic intertitles.
Alphaville 4/5
Very distinctive imagery all the way through, lots of 'every frame a picture' experiences.
Howl's Moving Castle 4/5
Wasn't sure how well this would work in black & white, but it looks beautiful - lots of very distinctive frames.
Un Chien Andalou 4/5
One of the first things I tried on the Slow Movie Player, and works really well.
Citizen Kane 3/5
Slightly less beautiful-looking than I expected, but works pretty well. Frames with newspaper pages are remarkably detailed.
The Battle of Algiers 3/5
Some beautiful images, a bit bleak.
The Shining 2/5
Surprisingly disappointing - relatively low contrast images, and maybe repetitive framing. Colour is so important in this film.
Koyaanisqatsi 2/5
Had high hopes for this, but it came across as relatively low-contrast and indistinct in this context.
Touch of Evil 2/5
Again, I expected this to work really well, perhaps it's just the file I got, but it was surprisingly grey and repetitive.
The Holy Mountain ?/5
Haven't left this running in the kitchen yet, suspect it would be fantastic with breakfast.
The Grand Budapest Hotel 4/5?
I've seen this movie 100 times so watching it so slowly was fun because I remembered lines from every scene. It's also very symmetrical and pretty
WEVAL - SOMEDAY Music video 5/5
Frames change so fast that every update is a treat. Played on slow settings with every step 1 frame.
Spirited Away 5/5
Beautiful movie with great art and absurd character design.
Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) 4/5
Playing the full MCU in order takes some commitment, and not all the movies are great for SlowMovie (looking at you Thor: Dark World). There are standout moments from individual films for MCU fans though. Seeing a frame of Tony Stark suiting up in the original Iron Man or a team shots from the Avengers are always a fun surprise as the movies play out. It's also a fun conversation piece if playing in an area where guests can see and comment since the characters are well known.
