Per Wikipedia, on the evening of September 21, 1776, soon after the British had taken over Manhattan, a fire began in the Fighting Cocks Tavern, near Whitehall Slip. It spread north and ultimately burned ~30% of the city. Arson by retreating rebels was suspected but not proven.

Several maps of the fire's progression exist, including some records at the New York Public Library, and provide details on notable buildings in the city, including those not destroyed by the fire.
