An 'Item' is the process of using machinery against a combination of raw materials or other items to create a new item. Items are normally classified in two categories

Transitional

A Transitional Item defines an item that is used in conjunction with other items or raw materials to create other items. For example, Sheet Metal is an Item (constructed from raw materials) that is then used to produce other items, such as an automobile.

Characteristics of a Transitional Item

1. Normally not for resale to the general public.
2. It can still be sold to the general public, as long as they have the necessary storage requirements.

Final

A Final Item defines an item that will not be used in further manufacturing. The vast majority of consumer goods are in this category.

Characteristics of a Final Item

1. Produced for resell to the general public

Hybrid

A Hybrid Item defines an item that represents both a transitional item and a final item. Farm produce is in the Hybrid category, as it can be sold straight to the public as much as it can be sold to manufacturers to create other food items.

Characteristics of a Hybrid Item

1. Produced for manufacturing consumption
2. Produced for general public consumption.
