The hardware openJVS uses to talk to the JVS-I/O bus is a simple USB-RS485 converter with an extra digital input pin hooked up to the 'sense' line.

Development has stalled, but if anyone is interested in the details, let me (@roysmeding) know and I'll do a more detailed write-up with schematics and all that.
