A Description of 'First 5 Minutes' - TheOnlyFrank/Obituary_GAME GitHub Wiki

What the Player will see first before all else!

When the Player loads up the game, they will be met with a title screen with some concept art of a crashed ship in an arctic environment. They will be able to click the buttons with Left-Mouse clicks to access ‘New Game’ to begin gameplay, ‘Credits’, ‘Story’, or ‘Quit’ to exit the application. ‘Credits’ will detail the Team Members and their roles. ‘Story’ will explain the story of what has happened and who the Player is. It won’t take any more than a second if the Player just wants to get straight into gameplay, if they look at ‘Credits’ and/or ‘Story’ then maybe a few more seconds.

If the Player chose to look at the ‘Story’ then they will get some lore into who their character is and what has happened; as well as what main goal the Player will need to accomplish. A summary of which is as follows:

  • You are John, you are a simple maintenance worker who ensures the ship is up to par and all crew and civilians on board are well. With the Colony Ship on its course to a newly enriched planet ripe for populating, there have been no bumps or worries. Until now. Systems have malfunctioned. Alarms have sounded that everyone must go to their cryopods and wait until further notice. During the panic, the robot workers have had their systems malfunctioned from peaceful and friendly, to violent and blood-thirsty. Soon enough, the ship crash-landed onto an unknown arctic planet. John seems to be the only one who has awoken from the cryopods. He must figure out what caused the malfunction and how he can send an SOS signal to those who still sleep within their crypods.

Once the Player starts the game, they will find they can move with the usual ‘WASD’ keys and have their character look/aim depending on where their mouse cursor would be. In the first room the Player is in they will pick up a Crowbar which if they click ‘Left Mouse Button’ they will attack. Seeing the door is locked the only thing left to check would be the Wire Box where a prompt will appear to interact with the ‘E’ key; letting them know for future interactions the ‘E’ key will be used more. As the Player progresses they will find a flashlight where, upon picking it up, they will get a toggle prompt somewhere on screen to press the ‘Q’ key to turn the flashlight on or off. The rest of the controls within the game reside in the puzzles the player will need to complete before finishing the level.

The Player will want to keep playing the game for more than 5 minutes as they will most likely want to know what has happened and how to get off the unknown planet they have crashed on. As well as maybe wanting to complete the puzzles and continue with the progression to see what else might be in store for them as they play the game. With the promise of there being 2 other areas to the game that will be implemented, it will also give the Player a sense of curiosity of where the game will go and how it might end.
