Introduction
"Pods of life... tall green structures you've known since you were born. Well, you were probably born in one too. The magic of the pods tended for your first few days before you were taken in by the tribe. Your family, the tribe you were born in, are the Volans. This is the name you've given yourselves, relayed to you by the pods of life when the first ones emerged hundreds of years ago.
But lately a sickness seems to have taken over the pods, their movement sluggish and unpredictable. Their once green and blue tendrils fading to a cold stony gray. For the first time, children have not been born for months, and large portions of the crop have wilted. The news are grave, and the sorrow is felt throughout the village. But not all hope is lost.
You have been chosen by the elders to descend into the cave below the pods. It usually is a forbidden place, but you've received the elder's blessings. An honor... but you've heard of tales of traps and death. Set up by the first ones to protect the pods... You'll have to muster all your strength and courage to help your people. Will you be up for the task?"
The World
The world of the Volans is all you've known since birth. A circular island of life surrounded by a vast rocky, sandy desert. You've come to call it greenland. It had already been explored by your ancestors..., well those that came before you. It takes about two days to cross the greenland when walking at a brisk pace. The area outside is dead. Anyone who has ventured so far as to lose track of the greenland has died, never to return.
Your tribe has always had a population of 148, of all forms and gender. When someone dies of old age or illness they were reborn in a new body several months later. Although, no one remembers this process and are of a completely new and different form. The new arrival gets a similar name is taught to the former member's place in the tribe.
The village itself is at the center of the greenland. The houses in the village are all made of wood and stone, the sole resources you have at your disposal. The legends say that the first ones learned how to build these from the gods and they have been maintained ever since. Everyone has a private room to follow their leisures and activities.
Work in the tribe is split up fairly, those who do best in any given activity are assigned to it. But overall there is not much work to do, baking a simple bread comes easily to the bakers who perfected their craft over the past decades. They learned it from the previous bakers, who had learned it from the previous ones and those had learned it from the first ones.
As leisure many have taken up crafts to decorate the village, or sparring with weapons made from wood. Regularly a small tournament is held, where amicable differences are fought out. The feast afterwards makes sure that any feelings or bruises evaporate.
Food and water exists in abundance, the forests are thick and populated by animals of all sizes. None are more dangerous than a wolf. Wolves also stay away from the village, having enough prey to hunt and space to live in. The water itself comes from the stone in the village center. It is of a similar stone as the pods of life, and every day water simply flows out of a crooked tip. This water is then caught in buckets and bowls to be rationed for everyone.
