This wiki, like most text people write on GitHub, is written in a special shorthand syntax called Markdown. GitHub adds its own flavor to Markdown, which is rendered to HTML in Issues, Commits, Wikis... pretty much everywhere on the site. So GitHub has provided a short article on how to write on GitHub which focuses on how Markdown works on GitHub.

Markdown is simple enough, and common enough among developers, that some advocate taking notes in Markdown, an idea that has become a feature in numerous note-taking and presentation apps.
