commenting achievement tree)
Write a comment (just one?) (opens aOpens an achievement path. Should just one comment do it? I think so because if they never write another comment (unless we make them non-optional somehow) they may not notice that it opens an achievement path. Of course, we could have an indicator that shows that an achievement path has been unlocked instead of actually making it an achievement in and of itself.
Note: Our first attempt may be more modeled after stackoverflow, in that after a player unlocks the ability to review other comments their reviews can be up-voted (perhaps comments can be up-voted as well?) and those will tie into the forum reputation tracking, but there are no higher tiers. If under that structure comments and reviews don't get enough attention, then we can try implementing the full achievement tree.
Improving on previous performance (score?)
This will depend on whether we include scores as a mechanic Note: NO achievements for having better scores than others
Replaying levels
Perhaps, if there is a display that indicates what levels have been completed, the color representing the completion of that level will change
Questions
To Map or Not To Map
This is about mapping in general, not just mapping achievements Pros for mapping:
- Gives player an idea of where they're heading, setting expectations and a sense of the bigger picture
- Examples of games with maps:
Pros for not mapping:
- Gives something for the community to do
- Adds another puzzle to ferret out
- Puts a phantom carrot out there - what if there's an achievement no one has discovered yet... (maybe it would be enough to just have some achievements or progress that wasn't mapped)
- Examples:
- Zoombinis had a geographical map, but the map did not describe the puzzles at those locations and it had logic puzzles with no written or verbal introduction to the puzzles (from what we recall)
- Gizmos and Gadgets
- Myst
My current favorite option: map the main path, leave other things unmapped.
Notes
Too many achievements
Too many achievements can make achievements meaningless. Achievements should be for optional things, progress along the main path should be tracked through milestones (though they will definitely get special sparkles).
