Setup Guide & F.A.Q - TexturesGuide/OoT3D_4K_SetupGuide GitHub Wiki

Installation:

If you're on Windows, Mac or Linux:

  1. Manually download a 3ds emulator for your operating system. For various reasons I'm not going to tell you which one is the best or where to get one, but a simple search will grant you plenty of results. Once that's done, run the emulator and add your game rom directory to it so that the game appears in the games list.

  2. Next, copy ALL the files and subfolders ("UI" "MAPS", "EFFECTS" etc.) from the 0004000000033500 folder in the texture pack directory inside the user > load > textures folder, into the custom textures directory for the game for your own region version, which you can access by opening up the emulator and right clicking on the game in the games list > "Open Custom Textures Location". This folder's name varies by region, and the numbers at the end define your region version. To clarify: ALL folders inside YOUR region version's folder MUST be copied over to ensure that everything will work properly, this includes the pack.json file nested inside one of the folders inside the load folder itself. It's crucial, too.

You can tell which version you're using by the folder name of your custom textures directory;

Japanese Version = 0004000000033400

USA/NTSC Version = 0004000000033500

PAL/European version = 0004000000033600

  1. Once the files have been copied over, make sure to enable "Load Custom Textures" in the Graphics Settings > Advanced tab, or else the custom textures won't load.

  2. Next, set the "Internal Resolution" in the Graphics Settings to a higher value than the default 1x (start with 2x and increase from there, if it starts to lag lower the internal resolution again).

  3. You must also make sure to DISABLE "Preload custom textures" in the emulator's Graphics Settings, since it's known to cause issues with custom textures and might cause stability problems or even crashes.

  4. Lastly, you need to bind your controller inside of the Controller Settings (this differs depending on which controller you're using, so you need to set the bindings manually to which ever way fits your play-style the best. It's very easy to set this up in the input settings of most emulators, usually also with an "Auto Map" feature which binds the inputs automatically for you).

  5. Enjoy!

IMPORTANT: If you want to bind the bottom touch screen to buttons on your controller, MAKE SURE to enable "Use button mapping" inside of the emulator Controls menu > Motion / Touch..., or else the bottom touch screen won't respond to any button inputs! That's it, enjoy!

NO GAME ROM, EMULATORS OR GAME FILES ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS TEXTURE PACK. DO NOT ASK FOR THEM HERE OR ON DISCORD, OR YOU WILL BE MUTED.

For SteamDeck users:

The installation is slightly different, and there are two alternate ways to do it (one is a fair bit simpler than the other):

Method #1- Using RetroDeck (might no longer work, but in case it works its the easiest method):

Follow the instructions here on how to install texture packs into RetroDeck (faster and simpler than installing manually). Make sure to disable "Preload custom textures" in the emulator Graphics Settings, or else the game might not start.

Method #2-

The manual method: Go into desktop mode. First install a 3ds emulator manually (you will need to find and provide this yourself). If you installed an emulator using Flatpak or Emudeck, your directory will be located inside of ~/.var/app/org."emulatorname"."emulator"/data/"emulator-emu" - You must first right click inside the emulator directory > Menu > Check the box for "Show Hidden Files" or else you may not be able to access the emulator folder. This will make it possible to navigate to the necessary emulator folder. The rest of the installation is the same as for Linux/MacOS, which you can find above. Make sure to disable "Preload custom textures" in the emulator Graphics Settings, or else the game might not start.

For Android users:

the process is very similar to that of Mac and Linux. First download the latest 3ds emulator apk, install it on your device and try running your game rom in it to make sure everything is working before installing the texture pack itself. Next, download the 1080p version of the texture pack on your device (the 4K version might not work on some android devices) and extract it using any .zip unarchival app (some android versions have this feature built in, whilst some require a third party app to unzip .zip files). Once that is done, open the texture pack folder and navigate to the user > load > textures folder.

Next, copy the folder called "0004000000033500" to this location on your device; Internal Storage/citra-emu/load/textures

IMPORTANT: If you are playing the European (PAL) version of the game, you MUST rename the folder from 0004000000033500 to 0004000000033600 or else the custom textures won't display!

Now finally, enable the "Load Custom Textures" option inside the Graphics Settings. Then set the "Internal Resolution" in the Graphics Settings to a higher value than the default 1x (start with 2x and increase from there, if it starts to lag lower the internal resolution again). Also make sure to disable "Preload custom textures" in the emulator Graphics Settings, or else the game might not start. Then start the game. It should say "4K" on the title screen, that's how you know it's working. Enjoy!

Optional - 60 FPS Support:

There is no way to get native 60 fps currently. However, its very easy to get interpolated 60 fps using Frame Generation, which will work on pretty much any AMD and NVIDIA GPU-equipped PC. There might be free tools out there that do this, but this paid tool is one that has been confirmed to work so far. You can download it from here https://store.steampowered.com/app/993090/Lossless_Scaling/) and enable the Frame Generation option inside of the program. That's it! (More information about this tool can be found down below in the F.A.Q section)

If you encounter any issues with the texture pack please post them on Discord

Enjoy!

How do I get the game rom?

No game assets, roms, keys, emulators or other associated files are distributed with this texture pack for legal reasons. You need to provide the game rom yourself if you wish to emulator the game. The conventionally legal way is to dump the game rom yourself from your own 3DS or 2DS console (you can easily find more information about this subject online).

Optional Addons:

Spanish UI Pack (1.4.2) (Optional)

Download PS4 Buttons Patch 1.4.0d (PS4 Layout) (Optional)

(By Ryan Waldroop) Download PS4 Buttons Patch 1.4.0 (Normal 3DS Layout) (Optional)

Optional Setups (recommended):

There are a few optional setups which have not / can not be enabled by default for various reasons. They are highly recommended, and you should consider following these instructions to add these features to get the best experience possible!

Make the bottom touch screen navigable using a controller (highly recommended):

You can set up the bottom touch screen to respond to button presses from the controller, to make opening things like the inventory and gear screens, and accessing the I and II buttons a lot easier. This video around the 3:10 mark shows how to do this in the input binding section.

Set a custom emulator icon (highly recommended):

You can easily replace the icon of any program you wish using a freeware tool called ResourceHacker. It's old, and the website feels a bit sketchy, but the tool is clean and works really well. Simple start the tool and load the .exe you want to replace the icon for inside the tool, then navigate to the "Icon" folder, and right click the icon in the list (or several, if there are multiple). Select "replace icon" and select the icon (.ico, you can convert a .png into a .ico file for free using a plethora of free online tools out there) on your PC you want to use. Then save! Just because I'm cool like that, here's an icon I've made myself you can use which has an appropriate theme.

Switch between the bottom and top screens using a button on your controller (highly recommended):

Unfortunately, 3ds emulators do not natively support controller hotkeys for switching between the bottom and top screens yet. So you will need to rely on a third party program to switch screens using a gamepad, such as DS4Windows (if you're using a Playstation or Switch controller) or JoyToKey (if you're using an xinput / Xbox controller).

As an example in DS4Windows, you can double click any of the buttons in the list and rebind it to any key on your keyboard. The default hotkey for switching windows in the emulator is F9, so if you set a button to F9 on your controller that'll work as a way to switch between the two displays when you need to. See this image on how to do it in DS4Windows.

I recommend that you bind the "Select" / "Options" button on your controller to this swap screens hotkey (F9), or the home button, to this key. Since it's only used for pausing the game normally, and start already does that so it's a bit redundant.

Adding a HD HUD (hearts, magic, rupees etc. on the top screen) (Recommended, requires extra setup):

There is currently no convenient way to set up a HD HUD for OOT3D. However, there is a somewhat hacky method which relies on overlaying screen elements using a third party software, such as OBS, to achieve a similar result as a proper HD HUD mod.

To do this, you will need the following:

  • Windows 10 or newer.

  • A relatively modern graphics card that is able to run a display at 1440p or higher!

  • A display of some kind.

    • The display does not need to be able to output in 1440p natively, but your operating system (Windows) MUST be set to at least 1440p for this method to work with everything aligned properly.
    • If you have an ADM or NVIDIA graphics card, then setting the resolution higher than your monitor supports in your graphics card control panel will work, and should produce great looking results.
  • OBS (download it from the OBS website)

  • The OBS scene collections I have created, which are provided alongside more detailed instructions in the "HD HUD Overlay Utility" which can be downloaded from the same place as the texture pack, through an optional download link (it's right below the regular download link). Use the 1440p or 4K version depending on your desired resolution.

The custom textures for the user interface in 4K, which have been modified to work best for this method in particular. They are included in the "HD HUD Overlay Utility" download.

Next, just follow the included instructions that come with the HD HUD Overlay Utility.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

How do I set up 60 FPS?

It is possible to display at 60 & 120 fps using Lossless Scaling, a tool which can be bought on Steam (I'm not sponsored by them, but I like the tool). It can interpolate frames in-game to give the appearance of 60 fps or higher, without any of the drawbacks of a cheat code or patch. There will be NO game breaking bugs or glitches using lossless scaling, as it's only active a post processing effect.

Here is some important information about using Lossless Scaling to get higher FPS:

  • Artifacts may appear when there is lots of sudden camera movements on screen.
  • The tool costs $6.99 on Steam (a price worth paying in my opinion, since it works for any game)
  • It is only available on Windows, and does not work on Linux or MacOS currently.
  • A somewhat modern GPU is required, preferably an RTX or recent AMD GPU.

Whether or not it's worth getting is for you to decide! Of course, playing the game in it's intended frame rate is a perfectly good experience as well, so don't feel forced to use this tool to have a good time.

Why is the game crashing / freezing on startup or after a while?

The most likely reason is because you have "Preload Custom Textures" enabled in the emulator Graphics Settings. This feature is known to be unstable at times and can cause issues like freezing and crashes. Try disabling this feature if it's enabled and see if this fixes the problem.

How do I enable 360 camera controls / free camera?

Download the OoT3D Camera Control Mod from here and follow the instructions (Right-click on OoT3D from the game list in the emulator and select "Open Mods Location". Place the patch files ("code.ips" and "exheader.bin") there.) The mod will then run when you start the game! Works on every version of the emulator on all platforms. All regions are supported except for the japanese version of the game.

The shaders never finish compiling!

This is because ReShade does not yet properly support the "Seperate Windows" feature in the emulator, so unfortunately you are not yet able to use both ReShade and the seperate windows feature at the same time. Either disable / remove ReShade (delete the opengl32.dll file in the texture pack folder) or disable seperate windows in the emulator to fix the issue.

How do I get motion controls / gyro for aiming?

The emulator supports gyro input and you can use it for aiming and so on, it's highly recommended! To enable it, you can use something like DS4Windows (if you are using a PS4 or PS5 controller) or BetterJoyForCemu (if you are using a Switch Joy-Con or Pro Controller) to enable a "UDP Server" (this option can be found inside the settings of DS4Windows, whilst BetterJoy already has this option enabled by default when you start the program. Just make sure it's running!). Simply enable it inside of DS4Windows in the "Settings" tab and then inside of the emulator Input Settings, click on "Motion / Touch..." and set the Motion Provider to CemuhookUDP. Then enter the appropriate port in the Port: section in the same window and click on "Test" to see if it worked. If it says "Success", it should work in-game! See this screenshot for more details.

Some textures are looking really weird / being replaced with other textures!

This is a known issue and is likely the result of a bug in the emulator where custom textures don't load in at the correct locations if the amount of free memory is running low. The fix is surprisingly simple, just disable "Linear Filtering" inside of the emulator Graphics Settings and restart the game. Keep in mind that you should refrain from loading save states frequently, since it's prone to make the bug appear more frequently. You should only save and load the game through the in-game save system, if possible.

Why is my game lagging a lot, even though my hardware should be enough? (I have an AMD graphics card/GPU)

This is likely the result of AMD's poor OpenGL drivers for windows that's causing the issues. Try disabling Hardware Shaders in Emulation>Configuration>Graphics>Advanced Tab and see if that makes an improvement!

Why have you not ported this to the N64 version / Ship of Harkinian?

There are several technical reasons why the pack has not been and currently cannot be ported over to the N64 version without first overcoming major technical hurdles. Some of the these hurdles include:

Different models, texture formats and texture UVs between the 3DS and N64 versions. Simple texture porting is not feasible without major manual rework to many textures.

Some things cannot yet be replaced in the N64 version due to tool limitations. Unless these tools get updated to support further modifications to the graphics, porting the pack over would be a lot more difficult and not everything would be possible to port over (there is also no built in texture pack support in projects like SoH, which makes things even more complicated).

As it stands, the 3DS version also has (albeit subjectively) superior lighting, models and animations. These enhanced aspects of the 3DS version should not be overlooked, as they're a big part of why the game looks so great on 3DS. So in these regards, the 3DS version is still the ideal version in terms of visual fidelity, even if the texture pack could be ported to the N64 version.

Yes, I'm aware someone is working on porting the 3DS models and textures over from the 3DS version into SoH. However, that project is not yet complete and does not clear any of the aforementioned technical hurdles above. I don't know about the legal implications of such a project either, but I'm not a lawyer so I'm not making any statements on that!

When using 60 FPS, Link gets stuck inside of the first tunnel in the beginning of the game!

This is another known issue and is the result of 60 FPS messing with some animations and timings. The fix is to simply disable the 60 FPS code temporarily before going into any tunnels, and then re-enabling it once you're on the other side. You can disable / enable codes on the fly in the cheats menu in emulator, even while the game is running by holding D-Pad Down. You don't need to restart the game. There are other sections in the game where you may need to disable 60 FPS to progress. They are;

  1. Before you crawl though any tunnel, you must disable 60 FPS. You can do this by holding "D-Pad Down" using the latest 60 FPS 3.0 code linked above, or if you're using the latest version it should have it included by default. If you do not do this the game will softlock and you will be forced to restart the game.

  2. When you need to throw the boomerang near the end of Jabu-Jabu's Belly to hit a crystal behind a pane of glass, otherwise your boomerang will not travel far enough to hit the switch.

  3. When you are fighting the Big Octo miniboss inside of Jabu-Jabu's Belly, same reason as the one above.

  4. When you are fighting the boss inside the Forest Temple.

  5. While jumping the fence with Epona after escaping from Lon Lon Ranch.

  6. Inside the Fire Temple when you walk into the first left room and meet Darunia, the game will softlock.

There may be other instances where you need to disable 60 FPS, but these are the ones I've had reported and have been able to verify myself.

  1. Near the end of the game, after completing the final trial inside Ganon's Castle and the cutscene where the barrier breaks is supposed to play. This could be GAME BREAKING and will PERMANENTLY CORRUPT YOUR SAVE if you happen to save your game after this point and the bug is active. You MUST disable 60 fps before shooting the last orb with a light arrow in the last trial in Ganon's Tower and let the cutscene play like normal to be able to progress after this point.

There is also the issue that it's almost impossible to perform spin attacks when using 60 FPS. This is another issue that really needs resolving, so if anyone is familiar with 3DS memory hacking, please get in touch! :)

Why can't I do spin attacks when using the 60 FPS version?

This is a known issue with the current 60 FPS patch, making it almost impossible to perform spin attacks. Fortunately, the spin attack is never required to beat the game. But it's an inconvenience nonetheless. This is a core issue that's being investigated and (hopefully) resolved shortly!

Why is the game crashing / displaying "A fatal error occured."

Generally, this error is caused by the texture pack folder being located too far into folders, causing the character limit to get exceeded when the game is trying to load or save data. Try moving the texture pack folder, or the 60 FPS Edition folder if you're using that, out onto your desktop or some other folder close to the root drive and see if that fixes the issue! If that does not work, try moving it to your "Program Files" folder in C:\Program Files.

Why is the text not crystal sharp, like in MM3D 4K and your other texture packs?

This is unfortunately because of the way OOT3D handles fonts and text in-game. Contrary to MM3D and most other games, OOT3D does not save it's font in a single texture sheet which can be edited. Instead, it generates the font for all the messages using an archaic font format called the "QuickBasic Font Format", which creates the sprites of each character in every message once they're needed before deleting them once they're not needed anymore. Because of the limitations of this font format, it is not possible to generate font larger than 8x16 pixels, which is super tiny. This is something I'm working on to resolve, to hopefully allow for crystal clear 4K text like in my other texture packs. I apologize for this inconvenience!

How do I disable 60 FPS? It says to hold "R" but it doesn't do anything.

This is because the binding to disable 60 FPS has been changed in recent versions to be "D-Pad Down" instead of "R". A new video guide will be made to accomodate for this change moving forward. Pressing D-Pad down should make the game "twice as fast", and the audio will be sped up as well. That's how you know it's working! Releasing D-Pad down will resume the game to the regular 60 FPS at normal speed. If the code isn't working for whatever reason, make sure you are playing the NTSC (North American) version of the game, since the PAL (European) version isn't supported at 60 FPS yet. If it still isn't working, try replacing the included 60 FPS cheat code with this one, which is confirmed to work and allows toggling the 60 FPS with D-Pad down:
