Virtual Private Networks – A Quick Guide - Tech-inmotion/VPNTechguy GitHub Wiki

There are so many new tools out there that you can install on any of your devices that connect to the internet. Let’s start by firstly distinguishing between the internet and World Wide Web just to give you some ground knowledge on a subject that you may or not already know about.

There are two reasons VPNs were invented. Firstly, it meant one company in office A (Paris) could connect to office B (London). It was what we know today as a Wide Area Network (WAN). VPNs form a secure encrypted tunnel that is almost impenetrable. It is extremely hard for a hacker to get through this VPN tunnel to snatch data packs as opposed to the days before VPNs existed.

Today people use VPNs not just for business, but also for their private use at home. It means they disguise their IP address by using the VPN to connect to another computer somewhere on the internet, which in turn connects the user to the Word Wide Web.

There is a good reason for this too. People sometimes don’t want others to know the websites they are accessing, or maybe they are on a public WiFi router and that router could gain access to their device via the internet connection. The VPN will form a tunnel to the VPN server and so if anyone on the public WiFi network was hacking people’s devices, the person using the VPN isn’t getting hacked.

If you were a hacker and saw a VPN tunnel, you would no doubt ignore it because there are easier fish to fry as for some off reason, the majority of people still don’t use VPN software on their laptops or mobile phones. For more useful information about VPNs have a look at getmoreprivacy.com.
