Introduction:

In Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, these concepts are mainly used in:

  • Database migration
  • Data Guard
  • Replication
  • Connectivity between systems

The idea is based on whether both systems are the same type or different types.

Heterogeneous keys pair

Both source and target systems use:

Same database type Same technology/environment

Example:

Oracle DB → Oracle DB

Real OCI Example Oracle DB on-premises → Oracle Autonomous Database in OCI Oracle Linux VM → Oracle Linux VM

Homogeneous key pair

Source and target systems are:

  • Different database types
  • Different technologies/platforms

Example:

MySQL → Oracle DB

SQL Server → Oracle DB

Features

  • Requires data transformation
  • More complex
  • Compatibility handling needed
  • Used during cross-platform migration
