Immersion and Theme
To give off a dark feeling in the castle but also enough to know what's going on, I wanted to use light in areas that needed light and keep certain areas mysterious or dark.
Here is one of the rooms that use the best lighting to invoke a lonely and empty feeling. Even though there is light in the scene, the shadows suggest there isn't enough.
Guidance and Orientation
I also wanted to use lighting to help the player not only see where the player is going, but also where the player COULD go. That is to say, I wanted to use light to guide the player on areas that they could go towards to help with the map's flow and gameplay.
In this screenshot, lighting makes a great use in the player's experience with the light streaks on the floor to highlight that the player can enter through this opening.
