Hurricane Preparedness: UF Prep Guide

  • Hurricane season lasts from June 1st through November 30th.
  • The busiest part of the season normally occurring from August to October.

Inform supervisors:

  • All staff, students, postdocs, visiting scientists, etc. need to inform their supervisor and administrative services personnel where they will be during and after the storm event.

Before the Storm:

  • Inside: Ensure all electrical and sensitive equipment is moved away from windows, placed on top of benches for flooding, and protected in boxes and bags as possible.
  • Outside: Ensure equipment, tools, experiments are removed or secured such as potted plants, weather stations, sprinkler irrigation.

During the Storm:

  • Stay indoors and do not travel during the storm If winds become strong, stay away from doors and windows.
  • Take refuge in an interior room, closet, or hallway.
  •   Do NOT use candles, which can increase the risk of a fire.
    
  • Understand that emergency services may not be able to respond during the storm.

After the Storm:

  • Contact supervisor and notify of safety or situations.
  • Make sure it is safe to return to the station/lab.
  • Document any damage with pictures of lab and field.
  • Take reasonable actions to protect your property from further damage.
  • Check on your neighbors.
  • Avoid downed power lines and flooded areas.
  • Expect delays and inconveniences.
  • Even the campus may be damaged, so please use care when traveling around it to avoid hazards.
