Manticore

A Manticore

Ill-tempered cousins of lions and other such large predatory cats, manticores possess innumerable spines, which serve as their primary means of attack. When angered - or even just hungry - they are able to launch a volley of spines at their prey.

Of course, unlike humanoids - or similarly-shaped undead - that seems only able to handle shooting one piece of ammunition at a time, the manticore is well aware of its biological advantage, and leverages it as best it can: its volley, while aimed, is not just aimed at its target, but at the area surrounding its target. In combat, a manticore is like a walking machine-gun.

Origin

The manticore comes from Persian legend, though belief in them became common in Europe in ancient times. Tthe idea to include them seems have come from the appearance of manticores in Dungeons & Dragons. Unlike D&D manticore (but like Persian manticores), these manticores don't fly.
