2 Scoring of REMLogic recordings - Steph-Fulda/PLMScoRe GitHub Wiki

##Scoring of REMLogic recordings ####Sleep The program assumes that sleep has been scored based on the current AASM standards, i.e. each epoch is scored as wake, N1, N2, N3, or REM. When using the program for the first time, you will be asked which annotations denote wake, N1, N2 etc.. This will provide the opportunity to accommodate non-standard sleep stage annotations. For example, if you scored stage 3 and stage 4 (according to Rechtschaffen & Kales, 1968) you can specify that both of these denote N3 sleep. Some support is available for non-standard epoch lengths, i.e. lengths different from 30 s, but this has not been extensively tested.

####Leg movements One of the important changes introduced in the WASM 2016 rules is that leg movements longer than 10 s now end a possible PLM series. For this reason, all leg movement 0.5s or longer should be marked in the recording. Leg movements must be marked on the left or right leg channel, wherever they occur.

You should mark each leg movement from the start to the end of the leg movement.

Often it is necessary to ungroup the leg channels in REMLogic before marking single leg movements, otherwise all marked leg movements will be associated to one leg channel only. Just right-click on the leg channel panel and chose ungroup. Depending on your local preferences, marked leg movements may be labeled by a number of different names including but not limited to PLM-LM, PLM-RRLM, LM, leftLM, or rightLM. The program will ask you which of the annotations denote leg movements, so you may want to scroll through your recording to see which labels you use. Do not worry, if in a single recording more than one label is used for leg movements, the program will accept all these as leg movements.

A word of warning: PLM often or always denote the PLM series and NOT single LM, consider carefully if you want choose it when asked what annotations denote leg movements!

####Arousals If you want to quantify the PLMS-arousal index, you should also score arousals in your sleep recording. Again, depending on your local preferences, REMLogic may label them in many different ways (eg. AROUSAL, AROUSAL-LM, AROUSAL-RESP etc.) but PLMscoRe will let you select as many annotations as you want/need.

####Respiratory events Especially in patients with obstructive sleep apnea, identification of respiratory event associated leg movement is an important step. The current WASM 2016 recommend to score two PLM indices, one considering all LM and another considering only LM that are not associated to respiratory events. Respiratory events that are considered are apneas (obstructive, mixed, central), hypopneas (obstructive, central), and respiratory effort related arousals (RERAs).

Once you have scored sleep, leg movements, arousals, and respiratory events you can export this information in a REMLogic event txt file.
