Order of Magnitude - SoojungHong/SomeMath GitHub Wiki

Order of Magnitude : Common logarithm of a positive quantity. If you compare two numbers, find the form of power of 10, then compare/find the common logarithm of both numbers and then calculate the difference. An order of magnitude is a power of 10. We touched upon orders of magnitude when we talked about units, prefixes for units, and error.

We're going to practice estimating to the correct order of magnitude. Only a whole number power of 10 is accepted. Numbers in between will be rounded to the nearest order of magnitude.

Recap

An order of magnitude is a power of 10.
Orders of magnitude are used to compare sizes or quantities of things.
Using orders of magnitude to estimate a quantity can be quicker than using unit conversion, as long as precision isn't needed.
