Q.Research potential software options for community and resource sharing portals. What works and what doesn't work as well?

Software Options-

Moodle - According to what is needed right now, I would suggest the use of moodle for the community and the resource portals as it is one of the widely used open source portals. Since it is very user friendly and widely used, it is easier for people to adapt. It is also comparatively easy to setup and we can make changes according to our use also. It has all the features like login,forums, events, activities, profile,site news, calender, messages, and can be linked to a mailing list thus all notifications can be sent to mailing list etc. It can be modified to incorporate maps into it, as maps will be useful for Cadasta community. Resource sharing is one of the main objective of moodle. Since it is open source, a large community is there to help.

Q. Is there any way we can collaborate with others who have similar needs?

Collaboration can be done on the moodle, may be a login is required or it can also be put as open where anybody can post. Or we can also do the collaboration on the wiki and include it in the moodle. I think this combination of the wiki and moodle will be best for the Cadasta Community. Since many organisations in this field use the wiki for the collaboration. Github is also good for collaborating and raising issues.
