Tools and Armor (Legacy) - SilentChaos512/SilentGems GitHub Wiki
Note on future versions: Silent's Gems will be removing its tool/armor system in Minecraft 1.13. Silent's Gems 3 will instead act as an expansion to Silent Gear if both mods are installed. This page is somewhat relevant to Silent Gear as well, as it is built on similar mechanics. But the crafting method is very different.
Introduction
Tools and armor are one of the biggest additions in Silent's Gems 2. These are modular with a crafting system very different from other mods. With a little time and planning, you can make gear that is much more powerful than anything from vanilla or many other mods.
Types
These are the different types of tools (including weapons). Armor is not listed because it's basically what you would expect, aside from the unusual crafting method.
- Sword - Classic vanilla swords.
- Dagger - Very fast but somewhat weak. Anything hit with a dagger has reduced invulnerability time.
- Katana - Faster than a sword, but slightly weaker. Often restricted to Super-tier.
- Machete - Slower than a sword, but more powerful. Somewhat effective as an axe and a sickle.
- Scepter - Very slow, low melee damage, high magic damage. Super-tier only by default (lower tiers would not be useful).
- Tomahawk - Throwing axes. Low melee damage, but a thrown tomahawk can deal a devastating amount of damage if it hits. Somewhat effective as an axe.
- Pickaxe - Similar to vanilla pickaxes, but they are effective on more materials, like glass. Area Miner super skill.
- Shovel - Similar to vanilla shovels. Area miner super skill. Repairs are more effective.
- Axe - Similar to vanilla axes, but can also break leaves quickly and without taking damage. Lumberjack super skill.
- Hoe - Mostly identical to vanilla hoes. Row Tiller super skill.
- Sickle - Clears plants in a wide area with a single swing. Can also be used to right-click harvest plants in a small area.
- Paxel - A pickaxe, shovel, and axe. A bit slower than a more specialized tool, but also more durable. Repairs are slightly less effective. Area Miner super skill.

Tools
Tools are made as you may expect, with main materials like ingots or gems crafted with rods (sticks, bones, iron rods, ornate rods, etc). You can mix together different main materials in a tool, but the rods must match. Additionally, all the mains must be the same tier (mundane, regular, or super) and the rod must be compatible with that tier. That may sound like a lot of restrictions, but there are well over one million possible pickaxes (as an example), not counting upgrades and expansion like Extra Parts.
Armor
Armor is very different, it requires an armor frame specific to the type of armor and the tier. Place the armor frame in the center of the crafting grid then place four main materials in the adjacent slots.
Recipe Conflicts and Workarounds
Unfortunately, using vanilla-style crafting does cause some recipe conflicts with other mods. This is not likely to be fixed in Silent's Gems. But Silent Gear was designed to prevent this from happening, so it won't be an issue in 1.13+.
One possible fix is to take advantage of material mixing (swap out one main for another type). If that's not possible, just swap out the sticks for some other rod (bones, stone rods?)
