The number of branches is getting out of hand. Some cleanup has started but more is needed. See issue #2370
Next release?
Normally we aim towards a release post code camp activity. This is now complicated given the large number of changes to main, some of which will probably break backward compatibility (the price of success?).
There is the added complication of the self-imposed feature parity. This is partly to help migrate the relatively large number of folks who are still using 4.x which we can no longer support.
These levels of changes probably requires jumping to 6.0. Further testing will need to be very rigorous.
On the other hand we cannot wait "forever" for a release to the larger community. One option might be to make a point release, e.g. 5.0.6 with some small but impactful number of the bug fixes in main? But this will require diverting resources...
