Survival
Ladybird is a modded server with over 500 mods, many of which increase the player's own power, and many others of which increase the game's difficulty. This page is meant to be the main reference for your day-to-day adventuring within this world. It will contain tips and observations on how to survive and Keep the Darkness at Bay.
The Dangers of Ladybird
22 Mods add or change the Mobs in the game. Of those, the following things are important to know:
- Any Mob can become Gigantic, dealing 6x its standard damage. Engage these at range.
- Any Mob can spawn as an "Eldritch" Mob, a Unique named Mob with special abilities. These have healthbars like bosses.
- All vanilla Mobs have received buffs to their abilities - don't trust that you know anything about a Mob before you've fought it!
- Other Dimensions will sometimes bleed into ours, allowing hostile creatures to pass through!
- Most Dungeons now have bosses, but also great loot!
Basic Survival Tips
- MINIMAP A minimap has been added, and it acts as a radar to see Mobs.
- Axes are now classified as weapons with regard to durability loss, meaning they won't lose extra durability when fighting with them. In addition to this, when you use an Axe on a tree, you will chop it down instead of just destroying the one block.
- Berries: There are many colored berries throughout the world which can provide short potion effects when you eat them. Beware: pricking yourself with their bushes can provide the debuff version of that effect!
- Death: When you die your things are put in a grave and you are given a compass to locate it. But be warned! A stronger zombified version of yourself may be there guarding it! Unless it wanders off...
- Invulnerability: You now spawn with a few seconds of Invulnerability
- Mobs are now solid and block paths and can be stood upon, which could help or hinder you. Be aware of this!
- Mobs can now drop hearts to heal you. Bosses drop many hearts.
- Waystones: Oblong statues you may find during your travels. These allow you to transport back to them.
Find Your Way Around
To find this mod's content many Quality of Life features have been implemented. Among those are two prominent pieces that give you an excellent option for traveling:
- The Explorer's Compass lets you specify a Structure that it will attempt to locate within a radius.
- The Nature's Compass lets you specify a Biome that it will attempt to locate within a radius.
- A Notebook is available right in the main menu. It's actually a menu item, not an ingame item, so it will be available at all times. It uses the same visual interface that the game's books do.
Advanced Survival Tips
- Combat Rolling enables you to quick dodge out of the way of enemies. Bind this key in the options menu.
- Grindstones can be used to sharpen weapons, providing that weapon a temporary damage buff
- Lush Cave Biomes may have Heart Crystal Shards which can be crafted into temporary or permanent health upgrades
- Mounts: many of the new mobs can be tamed and mounted with a saddle. Eventually I'll do a writeup on which ones are available. At a glance: Elephants, Shadow Horses, and the various flying dragons you'll see around are all tameable. There are likely more.
- Ships have been added for traveling over water. Some of these may be better than the basic boat
- Snowballs can be used to freeze mobs. Create snow golems to protect yourself!
- Soulbound: A new enchantment which can be applied to some items (most items which can take enchantments can be soulbound). Soulbound items stay with you when you die, losing a little durability.
- Transforming: If you can defeat a particularly strong monster, you may transform into it to protect yourself. This could make traveling easier, or extra difficult. Check out the bindings for this in the menu but the starting bind is the
~
key to open up the menu and see what you've unlocked. You can also use a hotkey to swap to other forms.- Note: You cannot gain the forms of Bosses or Eldritch Mobs (Killing an Eldritch Mob may grant you access to its base form however).
- Warning While in another form you cannot use weapons or armor! But you will gain a portion of the health and armor of the mob you changed into.
- WARNING! If you die while transformed, you forget that transformation! You will have to re-earn it by killing that mob again.
Traveling Kit
When you go traveling there are some new equipment you may want to bring.
- Backpack - this is equippable in a trinket slot. Backpacks can be renamed, so you can designate one your travel kit
- A Sleeping bag or Hammock. Using these you can sleep at any time to alleviate fatigue, and also sleep at night to pass the time, without changing your spawn point.
- Campfires are more useful than ever so be sure to bring supplies: they provide regeneration when near them, ward off Mobs within a certain radius, and can be used to transform rotten flesh into leather now (with a small chance per flesh).
- Empty Bottles can be used to bottle your XP to save it for later (crouch and use the bottle) or can be consumed while in the water to refill your air. Hold a fiery item in your offhand while using the bottle to prevent your inventory filling with water bottles.
- Golden Feathers can be made by combining
8xGold + 1xFeather
to give you feather fall. - Soups now provide healing. Make some mushroom soups!
- Milk sates hunger now in addition to removing potion effects
- The Magic Mirror can be used to teleport back to your spawn. Be warned: this doesn't work across dimensions!
- The Soothing Lantern can be placed to prevent the generation of Eldritch Mobs it can be crafted once you obtain Gold.
- Look out in your recipe books for several Traps like caltrops, barbed wire and the like. There are all sorts of ways to protect yourself! Hats and Boots may now be created or found which provide a myriad of buff effects! Trinkets are available in multiple slots now and also provide many effects to improve your character. These can range from death totems to auto-healing to speed potions to straight up levitation. Throwable Fluids are available in two flavors:
- Throwable Water spawns a water source block and is made from
4xPrismarine Shard + 1xWater Bucket
- Throwable Lava spawns a lava source block and is made from
4xExploding Magma + 1xLava Bucket
- Exploding Magma is a new block made from
8xGunpowder and 1xMagma Cream
- Exploding Magma is a new block made from
- Tridents With Riptide have been upgraded to enable you to use the Riptide ability whenever you are holding a water bucket in your offhand.
Village Survival
Living in Villages is a Good Idea for surviving, and there are a few ways that this has been improved:
- You can now craft a Help Wanted sign next to a job block to attract new Villagers. Place an Emerald Block or Emerald next to it to increase the change one will appear the next morning.
- Zombie Villagers now have a much higher chance to spawn, giving you ample opportunities to rescue and invite them to live with you!
- Villagers can be relocated using the Villager Globe! A onetime use item made with a Pressure Plate and a Glass Block.
- Villages spawn Guards now, in addition to the Iron Golem. Blacksmiths can heal Iron Golems, and Clerics can heal Villagers.
Quality of Life
These are changes which will not help so much with traveling and surviving the horrors of this world, but rather will help ease the frustration of playing, which a more difficult setting can cause.
- Chests can now be named (as well as backpacks, as stated above). This, combined with the many varieties of chests now available, should help with sorting items.
- Crawling has been implemented although I think that may just be a visual change.
- Crops are automatically replanted if you use a Hoe to harvest them. Crouch or switch away from the hoe to avoid replanting.
- Dimensional Traders may spawn, instead of regular traders, bringing with them goods from the Nether or the End!
- Dismount another entity that's sitting in your boat or another sittable thing by use-clicking it! Rude! (Doesn't work on players, probably don't try it on hostile mobs)
- The Fishing Bell will ding whenever you've got a fish on the line. Craft it and put it in your inventory.
- Followers teleport whenever you teleport. Make sure you sit down your pets you don't want to come with you!
- Iron Door Keys are available to open Iron Doors and Iron Trapdoors. As far as I know this hasn't enabled Mobs to open these doors.
- Hand Over Your Items enables you to hand a player a whole stack of something right in their inventory, skipping the "toss it on the ground" step. To do this, Crouch in front of the player, target them, and press the drop button (I have to test how this works exactly).
- Gunpowder can now be crafted from Sulfur and Potassium, found while mining.
- The Double Hotbar mod enables a second hotbar using your lowest row in your inventory. Bind a key in the options menu to swap the whole hotbar on the fly.
- Rain Be Gone is a ritual you can perform by placing a log on the ground surrounded (in any pattern) by 4 or more Cauldrons. Set the log on fire with flint and steel and the rain will be magically sucked into the cauldrons!
- Redstone Improvements Many new redstone blocks are available, and a Redstone Quill can be used to draw redstone lines using the redstone powder from your inventory, or a Redstone Pen can be created, which comes with its own limited supply of redstone to draw with.
- Sitting on stairs and slabs is possible
- Stack Autorefill when you are building or using a stack in your hand, when you use the last item in the stack the game will look in your inventory for another stack of the same item and move that stack to your hand.
- "Where Is It?" Is a menu option you can bind to a key in the controls menu. It brings up a GUI interface which lets you locate items you've placed in nearby chests. If you're holding an item in your hand when you press the keybind, it highlights that specific item.
- Wool blocks and furniture can be dyed by use-clicking a dye onto them when they're in the world. This works on all vanilla and most modded items but there may be some it doesn't work on.
