The Soul of Heroism "In my left hand, I bear annihilation. In my right, I bear hope. I have been gifted the primal workings of the universe. Who are you to defile it?"
##Parias history Parias hails from HeXen: Beyond Heretic, a sequel to Heretic released in 1995 by Raven Software.
Set a thousand years after Heretic and on an entirely different planet, HeXen continues the tale of the three Serpent Riders and the worlds that they conquer. After the DnD-esque world of Parthoris, however, in comes the very heavy-metal-inspired world of Cronos; a world where everyone wears black with red, spikes are mandatory for every fashion, and fanged skulls and skeletons are perfect choices for even churches to decorate with.
In many ways, HeXen was much like its predecessor--inventory system, fantasy enemies and weapons, Serpent Rider, etc. Along with Strife, though, HeXen pushed the idtech1 engine to its utmost limit, creating numerous advancements that make the engine so modifiable and loved today. HeXen introduced a player class system, the ability to have characters differentiate from each other in gameplay, the ACS script language for extra ambiance/tricks/traps, and a "hub"-based level system that allows players to go back and forth between sub-levels as a part of one larger level.
Gameplay, however, had a decisively different bent from all the previous games. While Heretic and Doom was up-front about traveling through action-packed levels and fighting off endless hordes of enemies, HeXen focused more on going back and forth between hubs, solving puzzles, hitting switches, and putting inventory items in proper slots. Combine this with the low amount of weapons for each character, and HeXen easily cements itself as the most controversial of the idtech1 games. Its supporters have cited its unique atmosphere and intricate design, as well as all the obvious care that was put into each level. Its detractors usually cannot respond, as they have been put to sleep out of sheer boredom.
##Parias in Samsara Parias is the Brawler of the Heroes, and effectively acts as a holy wrecking ball. Parias' general playstyle is to zoom into the fray, pulverize enemies with frightening power, and then move on to the next mob. Accentuating this is incredible speed to keep him in constant movement from one enemy to the next, and a 75% resistance to radius damage so enemies firing explosive aren't as much of a nasty deal. Offsetting this is a very obvious weakness. Almost all of his weapons, sans the Hammer of Retribution, work better the closer you are to your enemy, and thus almost all of his weapons (again sans the Hammer of Retribution) drastically reduce in effectiveness if you're not right in your enemy's face. Considering the general movement speed and playstyle of idtech1 this would not be expected to be a big issue, but mappers love putting annoying enemies on big ledges juuuust out of reach, and deathmatchers love hanging above on the high ground. Parias players will need to assess situations quickly, finding out who is in range and who is not, and figure out how to minimize damage from long range while mowing down enemies in close range.
Strengths: Parias hits hard and hits fast, with his weapons dealing pretty nasty damage at a very fast rate. Weaknesses: His lack of range cannot be overstated. Even mid-range is something Parias has trouble really hitting. Main Weapons: Timon's Axe, Firestorm
##Weapon loadout
Mace of Contrition: The Mace of Contrition is a nice starting melee that hits surprisingly hard (25-40 damage!), but the most notable facet about it is its autoaim. It searches for a target in a 90-degree cone in front of Parias, with a 128 range...twice the range of normal melee attacks! If you know your target is weak, be it Deathmatch or Co-op, let the satisfying crunch of spiked metal on flesh sound out--it's an easy kill that doesn't require a lot of trouble to aim.
